It's a RAID!
Not that kind.

I too have many questions about RAIDs and it looks like I am not the only one. So let's here it; what are they, plusses, minuses, should we do it or not.
The Western Digital Media Player thread convinced me to buy one so let's hear it DSF techoweenies

wow, thanks for all that info. I get it now. So basically you have 3 TBs of storage but some it is used to parity some data. so technically you only have 2 TBs of storage?
I just have 2 extra 1 TB drives that i copy everything to on each drive. So basically I have 2 separate drives with copies of everything twice. I burn all my movies and then delete them so I don't need much more than a TB. I like that it could be faster for editing movies though. It takes freakin 3 hours to convert one DVD to an avi.

Basically, yeah. I am sacrificing 1TB of storage to "back up" 2TB. Don't even ask me how parity bits work. I know about them, but it's a way beyond my level of understanding. Here's the Wiki entry on parity bits.

And actually, that's probably not an accurate statement. I know there are lots of people that understand RAIDs better than me that would take issue with me saying my RAID 5 is "backing up" any of my data.

yes it is RAID 0
But i mostly work on TV commercials, shows, or corporate videos so i never need long term storage of data. Once the project is done i rent a DIGIbeta deck for $700/day and output it. I then hand that tape off to my client. Then i might make a copy for myself but the data gets erased.
There is no way i would need or afford anything other than RAID 0 --- it's just too expensive for what i do.
My current RAID array cost around $12,000 U.S. (thats not a typo). Granted the prices have probably come down a lot since then but i'm sure to duplicate what i have in a different RAID set-up would be cost prohibitive.
