We used to keep newts when my wife first moved in along with frogs and fish, but when my son was born we slowly phased out all of the high-maintenance animals. Tank cleaning is a bitch.

yup, huge pain in the ass. worse than fish. If you even have a little soap on your hands, you can kill them if you touch them. but very rewarding and fascinating. raising tadpoles if a lot of fun too.

My wife had some surgery, and was sleeping on the couch and she asked me to feed the fish, which was usually her job. I fed them like how I eat, not like how she eats, so there was perhaps a surplus of food in the water. A little later, she asked me to turn the filter off so she could sleep. And then the next morning, we had a whole tank full of suffocated fish.

On the plus side, I wasn't asked to feed the fish anymore.

all the oxygen in the water was used up without the filter on. With the decaying food, the ammonia levels spiked.
You might as well flush your fish if you plan on shutting off the filter without an air stone.
