ive already modded a few wii's and my 360, so im comfortable with the risk.....ive just not invested the time yet into the ipod shit. im going to go ahead and buy them. if i see a reason to jailbreak them, then ill learn how to do it, i suppose. who knows? they may never need it done.

My daughter "lost" two and now I refuse to get her another.

What really pisses me off is Apple refuses to do any tracking of lost/stolen iPods. Consider that in order to put anything on them, you have to install iTunes and then register the device through iTunes with Apple. Doing so links the device's ID and serial to an email, pay account info and an IP Address. So Apple always knows what devices are accessing their service. Yet, they refuse to help even the police track devices.

This alone is reason I will never buy an Apple product again. They are encouraging thieves.

and if your getting a touch make a visit to the DSF Apps thread and get the Touch Copy Application. it is invaluable if anything should ever happen to the computer you use to sync the touch. my wifes laptop crashed and i had to install a new hard drive, and she would have lost alot of crap she had on it.

you are throwing out misguided info there strom. an itunes account is not needed to add music onto an ipod unless you plan to purchase your music through itunes. you can register your ipod with apple if you choose to but that is the last online interaction it has to have unless you search out a software update. apple knows what itunes accounts are accessing their online store but it is not up to them to track what products are being connected to the itunes player.

apple has no business getting involved in police issues. people have the right to sell a product they have previously registered if they so desire.

I never said you have to have an iTunes account, but you do have to use iTunes and you must first register your iPod with iTunes on that machine. Of all the info that iTunes sends to Apple, it includes all iPods "linked" with the installed iTunes.

RE: "Not up to them to track..." Ask the Palm Pre owners what they think about that. Not being argumentative here, but if Apple can repeatedly disable Palm's Pre, they can track lost/stolen iPod's too. Heck, do it for a fee. At least, implement a disable option.

Notice, I didn't say anything about SOLD devices. I'm concerned about lost or stolen devices.

As to police issues, yes they do. Even though multiple police departments have issues warrants to Apple seeking the info I mention, Apple refuses to release said info saying that said info would not prove who has the stolen items and therefore they are not required to release said info. Notice, they didn't say they don't have it.

Sadly, they are financially motivated to NOT help with these cases as not helping means they can sell more devices and services. Sad, just sad.

It's kinda like having an OnStar equipped car get stolen and OnStar refusing to track/disable it for the owner.

you can use programs like floola that allow you to add music to an ipod without using itunes, there for bypassing any transfer of information through itunes after the initial setup.

i never said they couldnt track ipods, i just said it wasnt up to them which is a smart move on their part to take any accountability off their shoulders with any civil/court matters dealing in loss or theft. this would also apply to your comment about them releasing any possible information they have to the authorities.

disabling palm pre users is a move to keep people buying iphones instead of the competitors product...apple has invested large amounts of money into itunes and ipods/iphones, why would they allow a third party company the ability to use their product without receiving any kind of revenue in return?

unless your company is orchestrated around recovering lost or stolen products, it wouldnt be financially motivating to any company to help with that...no shame on apple for that. as for onstar, that is a service you pay for that is partially aimed at helping recover your vehicle. if you dont pay for the service, gm could give two shits if your vehicle is stolen.
