I've used conditional formatting before...it works pretty well and might work for your application (large #s) because you can make all the duplicate cell shading go red?
=COUNTIF($A$1:$A$1000,A1)>1
put that in the formula part of conditional format option (a1:a1000 is obv. your range of data).
