You can get one on ebay for 20 bucks (plus shipping). Once you get one, go to a tailor and get the kidney belt modified and plumped with some 1" foam covered with some nylon and sewn to it. Your back will thank me, the GI issue kidney belt was always a little thin and could give you blisters. The newer MOLLE gear solves a lot of these problems but the cost shoots up. The best is the new Marine gear ILBE. But you have to be a government to afford the shit. I've always considered modified ALICE to be the best value for the money.
I've had my pack for 5 years and in that time all my other friends have gone through 2-3 packs each of the civilian stuff. But ALICE just keeps on going. Get a large one with a frame since you can always cinch of the load straps for smaller loads, but you can't make a pack grow if you need it to carry more.
Edit: The ILBE stuff has come down in price since I first checked when it came out. Just wanted to make sure the facts I gave were accurate.
