hey y'all!!!! i've finally have enough money saved up to buy one of those high def televisions. i am not very tech savvy so i have come here for your help. what supplementary equipment must i buy to have high definition tv? i thought as long as you bought a tv that had that hdtv logo on it you were good to go.
I would also look into buying a power strip that filters out white noise, cause depending on what else you have near your TV, it can cause interference and "snow" to appear in the picture.
To get DirecTV on your HDTV, yeah, it'll cost you extra.
Bare minimum would be a HD Receiver and and extra $10 a month for the programming. You can probably talk them into handing over the receiver for free, but your mileage may vary.
They will probably try and sell you a DVR/receiver but since I'm a deeply biased Tivo fanatic, decline. I mean, you'll have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the money.
1. DON'T buy expensive cables (e.g. Monster, etc.). Don't spend more than $20us for a 6 footer. If you want to buy online, go to mono price dot com. Great site, I buy all my cables there, including xbox, wii, etc.
2. Buy a dvd which helps you adjust your display settings (contrast, et all) and do so one ALL the ports. Usually these disks are about $30. DO NOT LEAVE THE SETTINGS AS ARE OUT OF THE BOX. Brightness should usually be below %50.
3. Make sure your sat box supports HD output. My neighbor has older boxes where the support HD input (even from the dish) but they down convert on ALL ports including the DVI and component. So you're not really getting HD on the TV.
I got Directv with the HD access for free, I told them I wanted HD but I wasnt willing to pay for it, so they made me a deal, pay the $99 for the receiver and they will pick up the $9.99 a month for the HD access. Might be a route you may want to look into
