People/bands sample and steal melodies all the time... but if you're going to call yourself the "voice of a generation" you should probably be writing your own music, imho.

When he said voice, he meant voice. This new generation of digital superstars couldn't make music if they wanted to.

Now I realize the reason that I dig his "music" has absolutely nothing to do with him.

hmm great find. i think that him being the voice of our generation is a joke. hate him or love him.. this video actually shows why hes one of the best producers of the last 15 years (not rapper. fuck his rapping). yeah yeah say "anyone can rip old songs for tracks".... then why arent you doing it making millions?

I'm not saying he doesn't have some talent.

But since i am in the creative field i can speak intelligently on this subject.

Being faced with a blank page / canvas / monitor / music sheets etc... is MUCH more daunting and difficult than taking something someone else has created and tweaking it or adding to it. What he is making is music based on someone else's music. Not to mention the music that he is using consists primarily of hits.


Look at it this way:

Hmmm.... start from scratch writing melodies, taking into account pitch, rhythm, cadence, tones, and add lyrics all the while trying to make a song that works as a cohesive whole.

OR do it the Kanye West way.

Take an already finished hit song as your base and finesse it by adding bits, maybe change the tempo... add rap lyrics and you're done. Not to mention by using a hit song it is subliminally wired into a lot of peoples' subconscious... that's why some of his songs feel so instantly familiar.

Maybe he should try writing music from scratch. Who knows? He might turn out to be really good at it. He'll probably never know...

He is the voice of this generation... a generation full of hacks that couldn't come up with an original joke (Carlos Mencia) or an original piece of music if their lives depended on it. (Not that rap is music anyway. ) A generation that is more concerned with having money, getting attention, and having material possessions (Paris Hilton, etc) then anything else. A generation that is more easily bedazzled by a light and dance show then how deep the lyrics are. A generation that doesn't even care that all these pop stars aren't even really singing at their concerts but merely lip syncing. Or that they can't really sing as good as they sound on their albums. Or even that they aren't writing their own songs. Fuck this generation. Buncha fucking sheep letting yourselves be brainwashed into conformity.

Thank God we still have people like Maynard James Keenan!
