It only seems to be clear when it suits the person saying it.

Is the soldier just home from Iraq going straight to hell?
He killed therefore he's going to Hell - is it really that straightforward?

How about the guy who shoots an intruder entering his daughter's bedroom?

How about the people in Haiti searching through collapsed buildings for food or clothes? Is that stealing? Are they going to Hell?

Or the time you took home a pen from the office?

Do you look at DSF during working hours? That's technically stealing isn't it?

And the nearly 50% of marriages that end in divorce, are they all now breaking the adultery commandment?

I'm not attacking, just saying its not quite as black and white as Do Not Kill or Do not Steal. Ideally it should be, but it just doesn't work like that, real life is messy.

exactly, ideally it should be. but the biggest problem with religon isn't religon, it is the people involved. which is why i don't go to church.

ah yes, but religion is people. Belief is one thing, but once you get people who think they believe the same thing together, you get religion. You can't separate religion and people, just like you can't separate eggs from an omelet.

I'm not trying to join in on the debate because I'm not sure what I believe, but I'm pretty sure that the commandment has been mistranslated and dumbed down and was originally "thou shalt not murder." Murder is a lot different than killing someone who invades your home. As far as the soldiers/marines, I don't know about that, but I think some of them have their own hell here on earth to worry about which is more pressing than the hint of some danger after death.
