The city of Detroit is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The "Big Three" American car manufacturers, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, have their headquarters there. Outsourcing to low-wage countries, the credit crisis and the sudden strong oil prices from 2007 led to a declining demand for typical American cars. The subsequent mass layoffs were falling house prices and a further exodus from the city of Detroit as a result. The result is that Detroit is characterized by relatively high poverty and crime. As opportunity, jobs and people have disappeared from the city, Detroit's Cass Technical High School has been left empty and abandoned.
