deregulation is how we end up with real estate boom and stock market crash. if comcast is going to dick over the majority of the country, the govt should step in. this is how we get fucked paying over $100 for cable for shitty channels we dont need or want.

so wrong here. the govt was paying lenders to give loans to students AND backing the loans. by stopping this corporate welfare, the govt is saving billions and getting money to the students directly. trickle down at its most efficient.
and the govt already tries to steer students into wanted fields - education/medicine. depending on state or field, a student can get a free undergraduate and sometimes graduate education for free (have to teach/practice a specific place for specific time). but some students still choose to do their own thing. free market.
and watch the scare tactic/strawman. govt isnt going to designate students to go to fields like scary china.

well stick a dick up my ass, bc i still do torrents. i cant get behind the rapidshare thing. why pay and do hassle when you can get it free and its more easily searchable.
it starts with the downloaders...but then those who rent movies online...are they after that? that takes a lot of bandwidth. there is talk of charging more at certain popular times. charging more for intensive sites like youtube/hulu. uploading takes bandwidth. like i mentioned above, pretty soon we will be getting shitty internet for rediculous price. open the tube and let everyone use it.

my first rep points given to you sir. good to see some people arent so shortsighted.
not allowing for comcast to regulate the internet also means standing up to the govt trying to regulate the internet as well. saying "hands off" doesnt mean the internet turns socialist.

Why do they get to arbitrarily meter which content, via which site, is subject to charge?
Do you really think a company like Comcast would constrict the flow of NBC, as opposed to say ABC, now that they are majority owners?
And don't even go into the political ramifications - if NewsCorp decided to buy up monopolized access to the internet, as it's done in media...

I really hope the internet is never monopolized by any particular media, or anybody else. I only dread the intrusion of Govt. who I feel has too much influence. The problem is that once this shit is law, any administration might use it to their advantage.

it doesnt cost them extra for me to download a movie. they are just trying to make more money without offering more/better service.
do you want to pay exponentially more for internet bc you click all the threads on DSF (which takes bandwidth to load) versus someone who just checks their email and espn for boxscores once a day?
in the end, money wont be saved. no one is going to get cheaper internet. but the people who use it more will have to pay a lot more.

I hear that alot, and it seems to be at the core of the paranoia out there, but the problem I have is that the previous administration did more to eliminate consumer protections, which is a fundamental purpose of our representative government, and there was little outcry from the neo-faux-conservatives.
I believe that much of what is at the core of debates like these, and that of the health care debate, is an attempt at correction of that corporatist course.
A great many of the oppressive and dysfunctional aspects that we, as 'regular' citizens, are subject to, are due to lack of the moral & ethical oversight that is a primary function of an organized populace to counter the capitalist, free market forces that, by definition, lack accountability to anything but potentially exploitative profit motivations.
Too much government interference is what I fear, but what I see as the bigger threat right now is our exploitation by the unaccountable (such as monopolistic corporations).

I've had nothing but problems with torrents, whether it be extremely slow download speeds, low to no seeders for stuff I need, or downloading shit that didn't come as advertised or had a virus in it. And why the fuck would I start using them now when people that I personally know who live right down the street have been fucking busted downloading shit of torrents, when not a single god damn person in the history of the world has been busted for downloading off Rapidshare?
Sorry, I'll gladly pay $10 a month for Rapidshare over torrents, which by the way, are just as easily searchable as torrents are if you bothered to use Rapidshare.
