She's fluent in both. Even my Chinese friends do not understand people from Shanghai or people who speak other dialects. But my girl was born in Zhejaing province where they speak Mandarin and moved to Hong Kong for 10 years where they speak Cantonese.

Wow, so she's really tri-lingual then if she speaks English too (not like most of the world isn't loaded with polyglots while we xenophobic americans cower in our one fucked up derivative of the Queen's parlance). My understanding has always been that the written language was the (being more ideogram than representing words) is that right?

I'm going to have to get a dictionary out for that one. My girlfriend speaks 3 languages, plus a little German, but I barely speak English.
The written language is the same for all of the dialects. I think that's what you asked?

The characters have been around over 4000 years.

Yeah, it's ideograms, each character represents an idea that may have different words in different dialects. It's like drawing a picture of fire. We see it and say fire, the messicans or spanics see it and say fuego, ricky martin sees it and remembers his preparation h and warming KY.

yes, for instance, all the birds have a bird root in the character. A chicken has the bird root and an extra stroke or two. An eagle would have the same bird root as the chicken, but different added strokes. The spoken language is very difficult because of the tones. Mandarin has 5 tones and Cantonese has 7. In Mandarin, the word for chicken is the same as the word for prostitute except with a slightly different tone:-)
