Splinter: the wooden concept car

Apparently there's some worthwhile science in those Soap Box Derby cars we had to make in the Cub Scouts after all. North Carolina-based Joe Harmon Design has created "the world's first wooden supercar," which can reportedly reach speeds of 240 miles per hour.

The 15-foot-long "Splinter" has a 4.6-liter V8 engine and is made from maple, plywood, and fiberboard, according to Fareastgizmos. The the key to its speed advantage over metal cars is weight, according to its owners: It tips the scales at 2,500 pounds, they say, nearly 530 pounds less than a Porsche 911 GT3.

The six-speed Splinter, which supposedly gets decent gas mileage for a race car (up to 20 miles per gallon), is scheduled to roll out this year at an undisclosed price. Depending on how well it does, maybe a future Prius made out of bamboo isn't as crazy as it sounds.

Each takes 400 man hours and three years to build.

Alp Germaner has designed the beautiful Peaugot Capsule. He is based in Johannesburg,
South Africa and is an industrial designer par excellence. The Peugeot Capsule was inspired
by the KLR 650-A motorcycle and is a modern, off-road and single person housing. It
also has enough luggage capacity for overnight trips.



It comes with a built in GPS system and full time Internet connection allows you to stay in
touch wherever you are. There are also mirrors which double up as LCD screens and the
lectrical power engine make sure you don?t waste precious fuel.



It can also be used as a stool or a desk next to your tent and it comes with top solar
panels and single screen wipers. It is aimed at those who like trekking and camping out in
the open air. There is no information about the price or availability as it is still in the con-
ceptual stage. I would say, it is an interesting concept if you would like to camp out often.

Using wind to get from place A to place B is quite unusual for most of us.
But, how about about the Nereus, the water pad racer for adrenaline junkies?
Inspired by kite sailing, these pix are aconceptual design of a kite-powered
water craft capable of achieving relatively high speeds both on and under the
water.



Though I?m not sure if how much of a storm is necessary to get your 200 lb
body out of the water with all that sea drag, I?ll have to believe the designers
when they say the design of the vessel and the kite is sufficient. Controlling
the Nereus is just as easy as riding a bike they say. All you have to do is turn
the handlebars which are attached to the kite. To dive, just push down.
