I think Kimbo was/is going mainstream (it's funny, just got on the local sports radio station talking about this very same thing today) and for me, I'm torn, but leaning towards it's GOOD for the sport from a financial standpoint, but bad for the sport in other directions.
If they can get 10% of the people who would never watch a UFC/EliteXC/MMA in general that tune in just to see Kimbo, then it's great from a business standpoint. This of course means the undercard has to be good, if not great, and with some of the fights (Lawler/Smith for the most part, with the Gina Carano fight coming in too because people love to watch chicks fight) on the card it wouldn't surprise me that some people do get into the sport. That's where it's good.
However, what's bad about it is that a lot of people who watch a Kimbo fight are going to be terribly disappointed if he doesn't knock out Thompson (very unlikely, but still a possibility from a guy who's been in the sport for a LONG time) or if a lot of the fights on the undercard end up going to the ground (Leroy pointed out in the MMA thread though that most of these match-ups are set up to be fights that probably avoid the ground all together, and I wouldn't be surprised if management has encouraged people to go for knockouts more than usual with higher knockout bonuses) people will end up disappointed as well. All in all, I hope it goes well and people just don't get really turned off on MMA on the whole. That would suck.
