a NOOB electronics question

This may be a stupid question but Fsmak said (and i have read others say it also) that if a movie or TV show was made with the DivX codec then you can watch it on a DivX enabled DVD player.

But how do you know if it was made with a DivX codec? How do you tell?

Generally you can tell because it won't play...or play right.

I have never come across a vid this won't play...

If you want to check the codec on a particular video before you burn it, I use Gspot.

Content, Pictures  and Download links visible to registered users only.

You just run it, point it to the video file and it gives you all this info:



The section I highlighted in red shows all the codec info, and the 4CC code.

I don't know if this might be the result of something I installed at some point but if I just right click on the file, go to properties then click the summary tab it says how the video was compressed.

My experience from Divx DVD players is that they play pretty much anything you stick in them anyway, I imagine it would play Xvid as well etc.

That must be something you installed. 3rd party Windows DVD player software will usually give you that.

Also Lucas, If you have a video that is not Divx or Xvid, you can use this:
