The Miami Marlins just agreed with Jose Reyes on a 6 year, 106 million dollar deal. Bad signing IMHO. Hope Hanley isn't too pissed
They did make a smart signing in Heath Bell for 3/27.
I don't know what they're thinking spending all this money on future returns that won't materialize. They'll have to pull their usual bullshit and dump their entire roster, thereby negating any progress they've made by switching up their name.

I disagree. I think the Reyes singing, while risky, is a good move for the franchise. It makes them a player in major FA movement by showing they WILL spend money and Reyes can be a big star in the Latin community, helping ticket sales. Their season ticket sales are already through the roof in anticipation of the big FA signings and the new ball park, this will only help. Plus Guillen is there and he's already popular with the fans (for now).
If they make another big signing (Pujols, Fielder, Aramis Ramirez, lefty SP like Gio Gonzo) this offense is going to be ridonkulous and if Josh Johnson is healthy they have a solid rotation. There's a lot of if's but I think they can be a contender.
Bell is an old closer, losing mph by the month and his home/road splits have been abysmal for like 3 yrs (not looking up exacts but I read it recently). Being away from Petco is gonna hurt him bad and he was already on the decline. Plus the market is saturated with closers. They played their hand too early. If they'd waited a while they could've possibly signed him for less or gotten a better option. Though I sort of get why they wanted to sign Bell, to get away form the "Leo Nunez" fiasco and get a big name to fill the role and make fans forget about the whole deal.
FWIW sources close to Hanley say he had already agreed to move from SS before they made an offer to Reyes. He's their guy, I don't think they'd have made this move if he was gonna pout.

I think the "old ways" are gone. They've NEVER made offers like this, spending so crazily. The stadium deal was shit and they finally got out from under it and somehow convinced the city to build a new stadium, with AC (huge)! No more empty seats! They're banking hard on the Latin Community for support and if they get it the money will still be rolling in, even with the deals given out.
Maybe I'm an overzealous fan but I think the Miami Marlins are a new organization and will be good for a while.

ummmm i live in sofla, been a huge fan of the marlins forever, but i seriously think the reyes signing is dumb as fuck. this guy hasnt played a full season in how long? maybe im wrong, but all i can remember is him sitting out more than like 30 games each season.
also, fuck the marlins. i wont support them (financially), which hurts, until they change ownership. loria and samson have been bullshitting the entire league for the longest time, making $ off rev sharing, fleecing the city of miami to pay for basically the entire stadium, and in general, being assholes.
"We need you, the taxpayers of Miami-Dade, to finance our stadium, ok? We have no money, look, we're poor, we have the lowest payroll in the league, help us help you. We need this stadium, because it will mean a total of 1000 more fans will attend our games!......Oh, by the way, we just paid $20 mil to Jose Reyes and are offering $25 mil to Pujols, cool?"
Ridiculous. Plus, even with a new stadium, it won't be full more than 3 or 4 games. Unless they make the postseason. Seriously, it will be just as bad as the old stadium, maybe 1000 more a game. What a fucking waste.

The same could be said about the Mariners and Mets of years gone by, and where did it get them?

Guillen is a personal asshole, and as soon as the team figures that out, the sooner they'll bail on him.

They would be better off to put their money into Johnson and the rest of their rotation than to sign some twilight years free agent. Gio Gonzalez is not going to be traded. Billy Beane (not Brad Pitt mind you) said so yesterday.

You don't yet know how the new stadium will play. It may turn out to be a pitchers park and all the new FA signings will force their way out because they can't hit there.

If I was Hanley, I'd be super pissed and demand a trade. Guess he's taking the high road.

The old ways will never be gone as long as Loria is the owner. Besides, as soon as the 'latin community' gets wind of the gay new logo, they'll jump ship.

You've got me on the stadium thing. I thought I read somewhere it was a hitter's park, but you said it; won't know 'til it plays out.
As for the ownership, the new stadium deal w/ the city dictates they can't sell for ten years . If public opinion is like Beastley's then they aren't gonna make shit on ticket sales. I've never even been to South Fla so I wouldn't know how locals feel about the team.
I still hope they sign Cespedes and make a good run at the WS.

Anything with Oswaldo Guillen in is is automatically banned in my household. Fuck the fucking Marlins [even though they're gonna win it all this year].
