Exactly. I got too close to it by happenstance and it attacked. The dog was hungry or something. I wasn't gonna go anywhere near it anymore.

walk away? Take a picture, then walk away? Snakes don't attack. They strike out in defense or if they mistake you for food. Snakes hunt through smell or heat sensing pits on their head. Sometimes when they see an ankle pass by while they are under a stump or hiding in a bush, it looks like a small mammal to them. But once they see how big you are, they will just want to get away without getting eaten.

no, they are stupid. They will defend themselves or flee if they feel threatened. Eat, reproduce, regulate temperature. That's about all they think about. If you are nervous when you hold them, they sense that, but that's because there is an art to holding snakes.
