Default Ray Liotta

Ray Liotta, the intense actor from New Jersey best known for his turn as the hustler turned mob rat Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, has died. He was 67.

Publicist Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor died Wednesday night or early Thursday in his sleep in his hotel room while in the Dominican Republic making the movie Dangerous Waters. His fiancée, Jacy Nittolo, was with him. He had begun work on the film about a week ago.

The boyish, blue-eyed Liotta also was memorable as Ray Sinclair, the violent ex-convict husband of Melanie Griffith’s character, in Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild (1986); as the disgraced Chicago White Sox baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in the Kevin Costner starrer Field of Dreams (1989); and as the corrupt cop Matt Wozniak on the 2016-18 NBC cop drama Shades of Blue, opposite Jennifer Lopez.

“Ray was the epitome of a tough guy who was all mushy on the inside,” Lopez wrote on Twitter.

Crime stories were his specialty — he was a great choice to narrate Inside the Mafia for the National Geographic Channel in 2005 — and he was superb as shady cops in Unlawful Entry (1992), Cop Land (1997) and Narc (2002) and as the voice of the mobster Tommy Vercetti in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Amid a career resurgence, Liotta was quite busy recently, with big-screen roles in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story (2019), Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move (2021) and Alan Taylor’s The Many Saints of Newark (2021) — as two members of the Moltisanti family in the Sopranos prequel — and a gig as a villain on the third season of the Amazon series Hanna.

He starred alongside Taron Egerton on the upcoming Apple TV series Black Bird and, according to IMDb, worked on the still-to-be-released movies Cocaine Bear; The Substance; April 29, 1992; and an untitled Charlie Day-directed film.

GoodFellas (1990) was based on Nicholas Pileggi’s first book, 1985’s Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, which revolved around Hill, a street-level hustler in New York City who decides that the only way to get out of the mob alive is to snitch on his cohorts in the Lucchese crime family.

THR‘s Kirk Honeycutt noted in his review that Liotta “fulfills the promise of his [major] film debut in Something Wild. His choir-boy face perfectly masks the character’s dark behavior. As portrayed by Liotta, though, Henry never entirely loses the ‘good’ in the goodfella handle.”

He and co-star Joe Pesci improvised the classic “How am I funny?” sequence after Pesci told a story to Liotta and Scorsese about a situation he got caught in when someone misinterpreted what he was saying and got irate.

Lorraine Bracco, who played his wife in GoodFellas, paid tribute to him on Twitter.

“I am utterly shattered to hear this terrible news about my Ray,” she wrote. “I can be anywhere in the world & people will come up & tell me their favorite movie is GoodFellas. Then they always ask what was the best part of making that movie. My response has always been the same … Ray Liotta.”

Naomi Judd, Country Singer and Five-Time Grammy Winner, Dead at 76
By Nick Caruso / April 30 2022, 1:30 PM PDT

Naomi Judd, the matriarch of the Judd family and one half of the Country music duo The Judds, has died. She was 76.

The news was confirmed by daughters Wynonna and Ashley in a statement posted on Instagram Saturday. “Today we sisters experienced a tragedy,” they wrote. “We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

The announcement came just one day before The Judds — the duo comprised of Naomi and Wynonna — were set to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn.

The Judds had recently announced a farewell tour, their first in over a decade, which was set to kick off Sept. 30 in Grand Rapids, Mich. and end Oct. 28 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The duo had also performed on the CMT Music Awards earlier this month, which aired live on CBS April 11.

As one of the most successful acts in Country music history, The Judds won five Grammy Awards for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, in addition to nine Country Music Association awards. In the ’80s, the duo celebrated a string of eight straight No. 1 singles including “Why Not Me,” “Mama He’s Crazy” and “Girls’ Night Out.” Their final recorded studio album was 1990’s Love Can Build a Bridge.

Country music legend Naomi Judd, who died late last month at the age of 76, died of a self-inflicted firearm wound, her daughter, Hollywood star Ashley Judd, revealed.

The Grammy winner, who performed alongside daughter Wynonna Judd in the top-selling country music duo The Judds, died on April 30, just one day before she was scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as a member of The Judds.

Wynonna Judd, 57, and sister Ashley Judd, 54, confirmed their mother's death in a statement to TODAY on April 30.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness,” the statement said. “We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

Ashley Judd opened up about her mother's death in an interview Thursday with ABC News, revealing Naomi Judd “used a firearm.”

“That’s the piece of information that we are very uncomfortable sharing, but understand that we’re in a position that if we don’t say it someone else is going to,” she added. “When we’re talking about mental illness, it’s very important to be clear and to make the distinction between our loved one and the disease. It’s very real, and it lies, it’s savage.”

Naomi Judd had been candid for many years about her struggle with mental illness, even publishing a 2016 memoir about the subject, “River of Time: My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope,” which she called a “survivor’s manual about how to survive depression and anxiety.”

During a visit to TODAY in December 2017, she described falling into a “dark hole of depression” in 2011 that came “out of nowhere.”

“I didn’t get off my couch for two years,” revealed Judd. “I was so depressed that I couldn’t move. ... My husband (Larry Strickland) and my girlfriends and Ashley would come over and I would just go upstairs and lock the door to my bedroom. ... You become immobilized.”

“That’s how bad it can get,” she added. “It’s hard to describe. You go down in this deep, dark hole of depression and you don’t think that there’s another minute.’”

The same year, the “Love Can Build a Bridge” singer told NBC News that depression, which can be genetic, struck members of both sides of her family.

“My brain simply doesn’t make any of the happy chemicals it’s supposed to, and I have to use medication to give me a chance to have a life,” she explained.

“I used say to myself, looking in the mirror, 'I’m Naomi freaking Judd. I got this.' I even wrote it out and taped it there. But when the problem is your brain, when the problem involves the way that you’re thinking and the way you’re living every day of your life, you can’t pull that off anymore,” she added.

One day after announcing their mother’s death, Wynonna and Ashley Judd honored their mother at the Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

"My momma loved you so much, and she appreciated your love for her, and I’m sorry that she couldn’t hang on until today,” Ashley Judd told the audience.

“Your esteem for her and regard for her really penetrated her heart," she added, "and it was your affection for her that did keep her going in these last few years.”

Mike Hagerty, ‘Friends’ and ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Character Actor, Dies at 67
By Wilson Chapman

©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett C

Mike Hagerty, the prolific character actor who recently starred in HBO’s critically acclaimed dramedy “Somebody Somewhere,” died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 67.

Bridget Everett, who played Hagerty’s on-screen daughter in “Somebody Somewhere,” shared the news via her Instagram on Friday.

A veteran character actor with over 100 credits in various television shows and movies, Hagerty was also known for his recurring role in the hit NBC sitcom “Friends,” where he played Mr. Treeger, the superintendent of the apartment complex that the majority of the main cast lived in. He also was a main cast member on Fox’s “The George Carlin Show” and on HBO’s “Lucky Louie.” Born and raised in Chicago, Hagerty was noted for his distinctive mustache and thick Chicago accent and got his start as a performer at the city’s famed improv theater company Second City.

Hagerty began his onscreen career in the early 1980s with small roles in films such as “Doctor Detroit,” “The Imposter,” “Turk 182” and “Brewster’s Millions.” In 1986, he booked his first television role in an episode of classic sitcom “Cheers.” Over the next several decades, he would become a frequent sight on sitcoms, making appearances in well-known series such as “Married… with Children,” “Murphy Brown,” “Dear John,” “Get a Life,” “The Wonder Years,” “Martin,” “Seinfeld,” “The Wayans Bros.,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Grace Under Fire,” “Ally McBeal,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Boston Legal,” “Good Luck Charlie,” “Glee,” “Happy Endings,” “The Mindy Project” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Dramas he was featured in include “Crime Story,” “Angel,” “ER” and “Deadwood.” In addition to his role as Mr. Treeger in “Friends,” he also had recurring roles in shows such as “The Building,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “The Home Court.”

In 1994, Hagerty had his first regular television role on the short-lived “The George Carlin Show,” which starred the legendary comedian. Hagerty portrayed Frank MacNamara, a bar friend of Carlin’s character George O’Grady, on the show’s two seasons. In 2006, he was a main cast member on HBO’s “Lucky Louie,” where he played a mechanic Mike, the best friend and employer of main character Louis (Louis C.K.). In 2013, he had a recurring role in the TNT crime drama “Mob City,” playing “Fat Jack” Bray, a member of an LAPD squad dedicated to ending mafia operations in the city.

Although best known for his television roles, Hagerty also had several film roles, particularly in comedies. In 1987, he played the best friend of Kurt Russell in the comedy film “Overboard,” which also starred Goldie Hawn and Edward Herrmann. In the ’90s, he had notable roles in film’s such as “Dick Tracy,” “Space Truckers,” “Speed 2: Cruise Control” and “Inspector Gadget.” He also appeared in three Mike Myers comedies during the decade: “Wayne’s World,” “So I Married an Axe Murderer” and “Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me.”

“Somebody Somewhere,” which premiered last January, was one of Hagerty’s last projects. He portrayed Ed Miller, a Kansas farmer and the soft-spoken father of main character Sam (portrayed by Everett). Hagerty was a warm presence on the show, with the bond between his character and Sam becoming one of the main emotional cores of the show. An important Season 1 plotline was Ed’s attempts to keep the family together following the death of Sam’s sister, while struggling with his own grief. Aside from Everett, Hagerty’s main scene partner Jane Drake Brody, who portrayed his onscreen wife Mary Jo, who struggles with alcoholism was another important plot point for the show’s first season. At the time of Hagerty’s death, production on Season 2 of “Somebody Somewhere” was set to begin in a few weeks.

Hagerty is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, sister Mary Ann Hagerty, sister-in-law Kathleen O’Rourke and niece Meg.

Fred Ward, ‘The Right Stuff’ and ‘Tremors’ actor, dead at 79
By Nadine DeNinno
May 13, 2022

FilmMagic

Fred Ward, the veteran character actor best known for his diverse roles in “Tremors,” “The Right Stuff” and Robert Altman’s “Short Cuts,” has died. He was 79.

A rep for the “Exit Speed” star confirmed to The Post that he died last weekend.

“I am sad to announce the passing of acclaimed actor Fred Ward, who passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2022, at age 79,” the statement read.

“The Golden Globe winner, actor and producer is best known for ‘The Right Stuff,’ ‘Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins,’ ‘Tremors,’ ‘Miami Blues,’ ‘Henry & June,’ ‘The Player’ and ‘Short Cuts.'”

Ward’s rep Ron Hofmann told The Post his cause of death would not be revealed at this time — but they did share his last wishes:

“It was Fred Ward’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of donations to the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center. Please visit https://bit.ly/BUSMCTE or contact 617-358-9535 for more information.”

Ward spent the last years of his life developing his second-favorite art form — painting, his rep said.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie-France Ward, and his son, Django Ward.

News of his passing circulated Friday on Twitter with Rolling Stone editor Alan Sepinwall calling out Ward’s beloved cult status.

“RIP, Fred Ward, a great character actor whose big shot at leading man status, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, unfortunately flopped, but who kept giving great, lived-in performances for the rest of his career,” he wrote.

Film critic Robert Daniels also shared condolences, writing: “Fred Ward was absurdly good. A professional in everything he did from TREMORS to THE PLAYER. He could even turn in a great performance is something as patently dumb as JOE DIRT. Totally underrated.”

Ward began his career in 1979 alongside Clint Eastwood as his jailbreak buddy in “Escape From Alcatraz.” Before his breakout role, the San Diego native performed in cabarets in Europe and Northern Africa, Turner Classic Movies reported, before making his way to Los Angeles, where he supported himself by selling jewelry on the street.

After his “Alcatraz” success, he went on to star in “Southern Comfort” (1981), “Timerider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann” (1982) and “Uncommon Valor” (1983).

After working in television throughout the ’80s and ’90s, he landed a role alongside Kevin Bacon in “Tremors” and starred in its sequel, “Tremors II: Aftershocks.” He also starred in fan favorites such as “Exit Speed,” “Joe Dirt” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Ward also starred in “Miami Blues” (1990) alongside co-stars Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh and played Jennifer Lopez’s long-lost father in 2002’s “Enough.”

His latest buzzy role was in two episodes of the hit HBO series “True Detective.”

John Aylward, ‘ER’ and ‘The West Wing’ Actor, Dies at 75
By Wilson Chapman

Everett Collection

John Aylward, the actor best known for his recurring roles in popular NBC dramas “ER” and “The West Wing,” died Monday in Seattle from natural causes, his agent Mitchell K. Stubbs confirmed to Variety. He was 75.

Born and raised in Seattle, Aylward graduated from the University of Washington’s school of drama in 1970. He got his start as a theater actor, founding Seattle’s Empty Space Theatre in 1973. He served as a regular in Seattle Repertory Theatre for 15 years.

After getting his start in television with small roles on television films — including “The Secret Life of John Chapman,” “Stamp of a Killer,” “Third Degree Burn,” “Child in the Night” and “With a Vengeance” — Aylward began working more frequently on television in the ’90s, starting with a recurring role on “Northern Exposure.” Other television shows he had notable recurring and guest spots on over the course of his career included “Grace Under Fire,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Family Law,” “Ally McBeal,” “Dharma & Greg,” “The X-Files,” “Everwood,” “The Practice,” “Nip Tuck,” “Law & Order,” “Boston Legal,” “Alias,” “Mad Men,” “Fringe,” “Shameless” and “Yellowstone.”

Aylward was cast of “ER” in 1996, during its third season, after co-producer Carol Flynt saw him perform in “Psychopathia Sexualis” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Aylward played Dr. Donald Anspaugh, a leading board member of the central hospital, and the chief of staff and chief of surgery for much of the show’s run. Aylward appeared in over 70 episodes over the course of the show’s tenure, making his final appearance in 2008 during the show’s 15th and final season.

During the run of “ER,” Aylward also had a notable role in the seventh and final season of “The West Wing,” as DNC chairman Barry Goodwin, who advised the election campaign for presidential elect Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits), and eventually helped the transition between Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and Santos’ administrations. Other notable television roles include a main role in the short-lived 2000 NBC science fiction series “The Others,” and a recurring role in the 2020 USA series “Briarpatch.”

Although best known for his television work, Aylward also had supporting roles in several films, including “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III,” “Armageddon,” “Down With Love,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Nowhere Inn” and “The Way Back.” He also voiced Dr. Arne Magnusson in the 2007 video game “Half-Life 2: Episode Two.”

Aylward is survived by his wife Mary Fields.

Depeche Mode Keyboardist Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher Dead at 60

Rock Hall of Fame musician co-founded the group in 1980 and remained with them for more than 40 years

Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, the co-founder and keyboardist of beloved synth-pop and New Wave stalwarts Depeche Mode, died at the age of 60.

Fletcher’s bandmates announced his death Thursday on social media; Rolling Stone has confirmed that the cause of death was natural causes. “We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher,” the band said in a statement.

“Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold pint.”

Fletcher was a member of Depeche Mode for over 40 years, from their official formation in 1980 and their 1981 debut album Speak and Spell up through their most recent LP, 2017’s Spirit.

In 2020, Fletcher and his Depeche Mode bandmates — longtime members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore and former members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder — were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their pioneering role in the synth-pop, new wave and electronic music movements; the band has also played an influential role in heavy metal.

“The beauty of using electronics is that music can now be made in your bedroom,” Fletcher told Rolling Stone in 1990. “You don’t need to get four people together in some warehouse to practice. You don’t have to have four excellent musicians fighting among themselves. You can do it in your bedroom, and it’s all down to ideas.”

While Gahan served as the band’s frontman and Gore their main songwriter, the band (and Fletcher himself) often joked about Fletch’s role in the group. “Dave is the singer, Martin is the songwriter, Alan is the great musician and I just bum around,” he joked in the band’s 1989 documentary 101, co-directed by D.A. Pennebaker.

Beyond his admittedly ambiguous musical contributions, Fletcher is credited with playing on all 14 of the band’s studio albums and countless stadium-filling concert performances; Fletcher also had the unofficial title of tiebreaker in the event of Gore and Gahan coming to creative loggerheads.

“Most of the time we sort of agree with each other,” Fletcher told Rolling Stone France in 2017. “But we also have this golden rule that if Martin, Dave or myself really is against something, we would agree with that [tiebreaker]… It’s a team thing.”

“We’re saddened and shocked that Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has died,” Pet Shop Boys wrote on Twitter. “Fletch was a warm, friendly and funny person who loved electronic music and could also give sensible advice about the music business.”

Fletcher also said of his role in shaping Depeche Mode’s sound in a 2009 interview, “Within the band, I contribute the element of pop. (Gore), who writes most of the songs, loves American blues and country. And Dave has discovered jazz for himself. I, however, will probably eternally feel loyal to the simple pop melodies and the lightness they stand for.”

The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst tweeted Thursday, “Very sad news today. Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has passed. I knew Andy and considered him a friend. We crossed many of the same pathways as younger men . My heart goes out to his family, bandmates, and DM fans. RIP Fletch.”

Alan White, drummer with prog rock band Yes, dies aged 72
Drummer who joined in 1972 also played on albums by John Lennon and George Harrison

Alan White, longtime drummer for prog rock band Yes, has died at home aged 72 after a short illness. Announcing the news, the band said they were “shocked and stunned”.

White was one of the longest-running members of the group, having joined in 1972, replacing Bill Bruford (who joined King Crimson).

Born in 1949 in County Durham, White began playing the drums aged 12, and joined his first band a year later: the Downbeats, later the Blue Chips. Success stepped up a notch with a place in Billy Fury’s backing band, and after John Lennon saw a performance by another White band, prog rockers Griffin, he was recruited as drummer for the Plastic Ono Band.

Whisked in a limo to an airport and given three days to learn the group’s material, White played the concert that became live album Live Peace in Toronto 1969, and also played drums on Lennon’s album Imagine (plus vibraphone on Jealous Guy) as well as George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. Other live work came backing another drumming legend, Ginger Baker, in his sprawling group Air Force.

White was asked to join Yes in 1972, and again he had only three days to learn the repertoire for a US tour. “I was prepared for different time signatures and the way the band flowed, but I added more of a rock element than Bill [Bruford] did,” he later said.

The first studio album he played on (and the band’s sixth overall), Tales from Topographic Oceans, was also Yes’s first UK No 1. Success continued – 1977’s Going For the One was another chart-topper – but the band began fracturing, with keyboardist Rick Wakeman and the then singer Jon Anderson leaving by the early 1980s. Despite the brief addition of Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (AKA the Buggles) to the group, Yes split in 1981.

White played with Yes bassist Chris Squire and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page in a group called XYZ, whose work has been bootlegged but never formally released; Robert Plant was briefly mooted as a lead singer.

White formed another new band, Cinema, with Squire, Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye and guitarist Trevor Rabin, whose demos wooed Jon Anderson back to the fold – they soon relaunched the Yes name. This began the group’s most commercially successful period in the US, with the single Owner of a Lonely Heart reaching No 1 there in 1983.

Anderson left again in 1988, and formed Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe with other ex-Yes members. “I didn’t necessarily feel betrayed, but at the same time it was something for us to deal with,” White later said. “But we just put our heads down and carried on making Yes music.”

The lineup continued to fluctuate in the years since – Anderson and Howe rejoined in 1995, along with a brief spell for Wakeman – and there was another hiatus from 2005 to 2008, but White remained the rhythmic heart of the group throughout. “You want to keep the Yes name going to keep that high standard of musicianship and then carry it forward,” he said in 2015.

He is a credited songwriter on dozens of songs and played on more than 40 of their albums. Health difficulties beginning in 2016 meant his role with the group was reduced, but he continued to perform a portion of each live set, with Jay Schellen playing the bulk of the material.
