Big cat is on the loose in western PBC; residents warned to stay inside till it's found.

Wildlife officers cornered an escaped tiger in Loxahatchee this morning and shot it twice with a tranquilizer darts, authorities said.

Officials now are waiting for the animal to get groggy before moving it to return it to its cage in McCarthy's Wildlife Sanctuary, said Teri Barbera, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

It was caught on the grounds of the sanctuary.

An adult lion also got loose from the sanctuary at 12943 61st St. North this morning, though the lion was quickly recaptured, according to a statement circulated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Three western Palm Beach County schools - Golden Grove Elementary, Acreage Pines Elementary and Western Pines Middle - were put on alert as officials hunted for the big cat. Students were allowed to move only within main school buildings.

Editors Note: No students were eaten during the writing of this article. Since it is only the second day of a hurricane delayed school year, there is still hope.
