Texas indigo snake (Drymarchon melanurus erebennus), could be an eastern indigo also (Drymarchon couperi)

They are quite harmless. A very calm snake. They eat lots of rats and rattlesnakes too. Last time I was in TX I saw some asshole run one over a few seconds before I got to it.They are a federally protected species.

That's the best position to take for most people. You leave them alone they will leave you alone. Just don't step on them by accident

So you're a herpestologist then? I don't like snakes, but I don't hate them either. Long as the copperheads don't come home to roost in my crawlspace, I'm cool with them. I've seen people here in NC run over blacksnakes and then put their car/truck in reverse and run back over them. Kind of pointless if you ask me, but that's just the way things go (in Albuquerque?).

Yes I guess you can say I am a herpetologist. I work with snakes and crocodilians in the field. But most of the time I am home answering emails and writing useless reports.
Rednecks running over snakes on roads are making a terrible impact on snake populations all over the world. Especially in the southern US. It's illegal but the cops never enforce it.
