Another thing I just remembered is that the shuttle always enters exits and enters the atmospheres on an arc, never in a perpendicular configuration. I wonder if NASA has any real pics of the shuttle going thru clouds. I know it's highly unlikely just based on what you observed in that cancel launch.

just had a quick google, and while the majority of images take place during clear, blue skies, there are one or two with thick clouds in the distance. I'm no astrophysicist, but I would wager that for any kind of cloud to cause an abort, it would have to be of a certain type ('Anvil clouds', IIRC) and travelling over a certain speed.

Most of those might be pre-Challenger explosion. After the disaster, NASA changed a lot of procedures.
BTW, have you heard about the Space elevator that is being proposed. This is no joke. They are saying once built it will take riders a week to travel to outer space. Imagine being trapped in an elevator for a week and then you have a panic attack?? WTF R they thinking??
