I typically consider myself pretty politically conservative, but I'm not a republican, probably closer to a libertarian I guess if I look at it closely. But here's what I see and why I think the country is still going downhill and would have regardless of whether McCain or Obama won this election. The country was not devised to be a democracy that allowed people to make or influence the rules directly, there was still to be a ruling class, one that was elected by the populace, sure, but still a ruling class. The establishment of a two-party system also ensured that those who were in power found it easier to stay in power (when has a candidate that is not a Republican or Democrat last had a real chance to win the Presidency since these two parties came to major influence?). And despite the fact that Republicans seem on the surface to be interested in less government involvement in our lives, that's not the case because the government is like a first wife, after more and more and more money. The more structure and involvement you create, the more income you can capitalize from the populace. I don't like the concept of government-run healthcare anymore than I like the idea of government-run education (on a national level). I think that the US government should exist for a few reasons, including assuring that each state is treated equally by the other states, to protect the citizenry from attack by enemies foreign and domestic, and to strengthen each state by supporting its government inasmuch as that government does not try to conflict with other states in the realms of interstate commerce and the like). The more we stray from that and look to the government to answer all our questions and fulfill all our needs, the more of our freedoms we give away and the more of our hard-earned money they have to take to pay for all of this. I'm opposed to that, I'm opposed to the two-party system, I'm opposed to the electoral college, but I'm a huge fan of the United States of America. Where does that leave me, other than registered as an independent and voting my conscience rather than party lines every time I cast my ballot?

I guess this falls in this thread better than any else.
So I was just leaving the local Meijer's (kinda like a Walmart for those that don't know) when I happen to look out my passenger window back towards the store. I see three specks way out past the store and within 10 seconds they become three F-16s.
These fuckers were going extremely fast. I'm not some noob who's never been around military planes, I've ridden in quite a few classic prop-jobs and when I was a teen got a ride in a tomcat out over the ocean.
They were going so fast that the sound of them coming barely hit me before they flew right over my car. They couldn't have been more than 150 feet up, so low I could see the tail numbers.
How could I see those when they were right above me? Because at that point they started pulling a high-G turn, rolled totally knife-edge. They pulled that turn so tight that they were leaving contrail "fog" across the whole width of the plane. That turn radius had to be less than 1000'.
The really freaky, almost scary part wasn't that they were 1. going close to 500/600knots 2. running below radar level for this area 3. pulling high-g turn over residential homes.
It was that they were loaded with missiles. One each on the wingtips and three on each rack under the wings.
They came from the West (having had to have flown over the local private airport) and headed South on a line which would put them heading straight towards Columbus International Airport or Rickenbacker which used to be military and still has some restricted areas.
The only other time I've seen armed military jets fly like this around here was on and just after 9/11.
WTF! I want to know what the hell had them so hot.
In a fast-breaking development comes word that agents of the Attorney General office in Louisiana have raided ACORN?s offices in New Orleans. ACORN?s New Orleans was, for decades, the headquarters of the national community organizing association. News of the raid comes from Marcel Reid and her colleagues at ACORN 8, an association of former ACORN leaders and board members. Many of the individuals involved with ACORN 8 were fired from ACORN for demanding a forensic audit following an embezzlement scandal involving Dale Rathke, brother of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke.
Big Government has contacted the Louisiana Attorney?s General office. We are told that all of the press officers are ?out to lunch? right now. We have been promised a return call later this afternoon.
According to NOLA.com:
Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has served a search warrant at the ACORNoffice at 2609 Canal Street, according to Tammi Arender Herring, a spokeswoman with the office.
Investigators in khaki pants and polo shirts loaded several dozen computers and other electronic items into an SUV. They are also carrying records out of the building on handcarts.
The large office building sits at the corner of Dorgenois and Canal. ACORN staffers were given no notice that a search would be conducted today, Herring said.
Caldwell said investigators will copy records and hard drives, then return them to ACORN.
He said the original allegations of embezzlement were made last year by ACORN board members who were fired after they asked for a forensic examination of the group?s books.
ACORN fired the longtime director of its Louisiana chapter last month, citing a lack of accountability.
Big Government readers may remember that the ?longtime director? ACORNS?s LA chapter is Beth Butler, longtime companion/wife of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke.

In all honesty, Reagan was the last President that I think truly hadn't lost site of the job of the US Government. It should be about protected the citizens, the states, and ensuring that each state deals fairly with the other and with citizens from the other.

I know that it is difficult to see it right now but it has been 20 years since Reagan and his principals are coming back into vogue with the Tea Parties.
There was one on the steps of the US capitol yesterday regarding the takeover of 1/6th of the US economy. No surprize that CNN and MSLSD didn't talk about it.
The banks are gone, the Auto industry is gone, the Insurance industry is about to fall and all what's left besides the Agriculture industry is your personal medical privacy (Wasn't that the big reason for Roe vs. Wade?? The right to privacy????).
