These I also remember quite vividly.
During the space shuttle Challenger accident I actually watched it live on TV. I was in college in the middle of nowhere Texas and we were skipping class of course planning the night's debauchery. I don't even know why we had the TV on to that station except maybe MTV was playing some gay song. I remember watching and saying outloud. "That ain't fuckin right guys." And then of course the TV announcer started agreeing with me,
I was reading the DenverPost online the morning of the Columbine shooting because I was raised there basically and am a diehard fan of the Broncos. All of a sudden the screen went blank and when it came back it was at the frontpage and a newsflash scrolled telling people there was a hostage incident at the school.
All I have to say is Tuesdays are bad fucking days.
But Diana's accident is something I had to deal with as it was going on. I was working my regular Saturday night gig at the rock station when the news reports came over the wire. They were coming every few seconds and were totally contradictory. My company had an AM and FM station and I normally just cut my liners digitally, programmed them in and let the AM do it's own thing so I could do my rock show on FM.
I ended up going back and forth after each song and doing live updates until it was confirmed that she was definitely dead. It seemed to be three hours or so before the Associated Press could really finish the story. The AM show was soft rock anyway so the mood was appropriately somber. I had a lot of people call in telling me I done a good job in a trying time.
The FM side though was supposed to be a rock show. So I tried to be straight forward newsman about it but didn't play any of my stuff just kept with what had already been selected. But when it was definitely over I played this song and dedicated it to her:
LITTLE ANGELS
Don't Prey For Me
1988
s-Broken Wings of An Angel
It's a rock slowjam.
