Thanks for posting, Godfather. It made me sad when I only heard one offhand mention of the anniversary on the radio. These men were heroes and deserve to be remembered.
A friend just got back from a trip to Normandy, the locals are still so grateful of everyone who gave their lives for them, no matter the outcome for their particular town.
For instance, there's a village around that area that the Aussies helped liberate, and the Germans pretty much burned the entire thing to the ground apart from the town hall on their way out. If you're an Aussie - not just a descendant of a soldier that was there, but an Aussie - you're pretty much a local hero as soon as you arrive and will likely eat and drink free. The alternative for them was worse than seeing their entire village burnt to the ground, and they still honor the men that fought for them.
