You're 100% right. It seems like the version you used was from Spain. There are tons of different dialects. Even for instance close to the border. You have the formal Spanish used in Mexico, then you have "border spanish" and then you have Spanglish. Its crazy. I can call a car a caro here, but if I go to Mexico and its not close to my border people will look at me like im on crack because its a coche. Its pretty much insanity. You become familiar with it. Its the same in the US. The Spanish in west Texas is different from the Spanish in the Valley or in San Antonio.
