yikes! That is an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, (Crotalus atrox). Their record is less than 7 feet, but they average around 3 feet. Maybe 15 pounds for a really big one. I wish they got 15 feet. Also they form a new section of rattle every time they shed and they always break off. It's fun to rattle one under someones chair. They usually hit the roof

yeah I do the same thing when I take pictures of fish I caught. Always hold them out toward the camera. That's a big atrox for sure. Maybe 5-6 feet. It's sad assholes kill them like that. It's like seeing a lion and shooting it because it can kill you. People are fucked up.

I came across a real pretty red speckled rattler on a trail here in SoCal, scared the shit outta me! and I hung around to make sure he got off the trail so the next hikers through wouldn't stone him or something fucked up like that.

Heh- my old grad school roomie and I were mountain biking out in the hills of CA one day, working our way down a really narrow trail down the side of a steep hill. All of a sudden Courtney stops dead and tells us to turn around ASAP- huge rattler sitting in the middle of the trail staring at him. (well, it was probably about 3-4 feet, but it was big enough )
He looked a lot like me for a few minutes, which was impressive since I'm a skinny white guy and he was melanin-enhanced.
