I saw some weird shit the other day. I was tearing some shake shingles off a garage and a (I presume) dead spider was underneath. I poked it with the claw of my hammer and it didn't move. When I pulled the shingle, the spider spun a thread about 7 feet down to the ground. I watched it slide silently down. I never knew they could do that! Even in death, the silk was ready to go.
fuck the shovel, if I saw a bastard like that in the backyard it either (a.) becomes familiar with the shotgun, or (b.) it would take over 2 more acres of hunting ground..lol

It was in the twenties. No, I'm not sure. But it was unresponsive. I thought maybe it was "hibernating". But it sure seemed dead to me. Hell, I don't know.

Little too cold for a spider. who knows. Honestly I have no idea but I am pretty sure they can't make silk when they are dead, but the silk is amazing.

We had a pretty big orb weaver in my garden this last summer. It positioned itself between a couple of tomato plants and caught all sorts of things. I just let him setup house between those plants and never disturb it. It was fun to watch as the summer progressed. I wish I would have taken some pictures of it.

Yes. Very similar. However, there was no coloring on the legs. They were all black. I ID most of the insects/bugs/arachnids I come across from the NC State website. They have a decent agriculture and entomology department.
