Thanks for all the sympathy everyone.

My dad was also military (Marines). I held it together until after the ceremony. I went over the the honor guard as they were leaving and made sure to thank them each. That's when I lost it. I kept thinking about the younger Private who folded the flag and the tears in his eyes. Very touching that a stranger would have them for my dad.

Military honors can be setup by the funeral home.


Now I have to drag my ass to work and think about that crap and all the stuff I have to help my siblings move out of my dad's house too. That meticulous man has EVERY paycheck stub he's! It's amazing the paperwork he kept.

As long they didn't get a Dishonorable or Bad Conduct Discharge, they are entitled to a military funeral and burial at one of the national cemeteries (most likely not Arlington, but there are several in each state usually). Pred has it right, the best bet is to contact the VA and/or American Legion or AmVets.

Yeah, my dad didn't get discharged with bad or good conduct. I was only 12 or so when he got done so I'm not sure the exact circumstances of him getting done but the story I hear from him is that they wanted to send him back to Okinawa (unaccompanied) for a year or more in 1988 after he was already in Okinawa (unaccompanied) from 1986 to 1987. I guess his choice was to accept or get done and my dad chose to get done because he didn't want to go over there again without us. My dad was a desk Marine so I'm not sure the basis behind him getting done versus having to send him over there without a different choice of staying here in the states... He enlisted and went through boot camp in 1974 and was in from then on...

I just spent the day wandering around the set of World War Z, the new Brad Pitt movie that they are part filming in Glasgow. Having all the American road signs and cars lying about Glasgow city centre is quite weird.
