I feel like a noob now...
It's like I have a brand new computer now. Everything I uploaded and downloaded to this forum, to any other forum, for the past 2 years, has been lost to me.
I backed EVERYTHING up to my external HD, and started my PC just like new. Was in the middle of bringing things back to the main drive, and it shit out on me.
What I REALLY wanted to keep (Music, Movies, Games, and Porn, what DSF is known for) is now ALL GONE!!
So now, I get to go back through all the posts on here, and hope links are still active.
Thanks to Jester, I have not had to donate this computer to the Salvation Army!

Shit. That sucks. I've been working on a computer for a friend of mine, replacing a hard drive and have been having a hell of a time. I've gone thru 3 used (thought were good) bad drives until I found one that worked. They would power up, format, and take the system, but would start to crap out after 3-4 hours of hard use loading updates. Things would have been a lot easier if I could find the power cord to my external.
Download my thanksJester file. Or a good BJ will do nicely...

Look for manufacturer hard drive checking utilities. Often they do low level checks and give you a pass or fail. Takes longer, but given the time it takes to install a bunch of stuff then have it go south, I think the time balances out.

Fucking stop talking about this shit. I'm nervous enough. All my TV show downloads are on my external and I cam fucked if it goes out.

What exactly is it doing? Depending on what's wrong with it (i.e. USB shit out), it might work to crack the enclosure open and connect the drive straight to your motherboard.
Yeah, as long as you have written anything to it, most of it is probably still recoverable. Go get this program called PC Inspector File Recovery and give it a shot. All the data is still there magnetically until it is actually written over.
