Powerful 'lightsabre' on sale for $200

At last, every Star Wars fan's dream has been realised, a working 'lightsabre' has gone on sale.



But junior Jedis hoping to recreate the clash between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader should think again, as the Spyder III Pro Arctic is not a toy and its force could prove deadly, according to the manufacturer.

The 1watt tool, said to be the world's most powerful portable laser, features a blue ray that is 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on skin.

'Extremely dangerous is an understatement to the power,' says Hong Kong manufacturer Wicked Lasers.

'It will blind permanently and instantly and set fire quickly to skin and other body parts, use with extreme caution and only when using the included eye protection.'

The powerful beam can be seen by aircraft pilots 72km (45miles) away and should not be pointed at vehicles, children or animals, Wicked adds.

But, even though it is a potentially lethal weapon, it seems anyone with a credit card can order one.

Britain is listed as one of 70 countries the laser will be shipped to and there do not appear to be age checks on buyers.

Customers must agree to a Class IV Laser Hazard acknowledgment form before ordering online and the document says 'people have been arrested, fined and jailed for misuse'.

The Spyder III comes with safety goggles but even these cannot fully protect against the rays.

A post on a laser enthusiasts' website reads: 'I just ordered one. It will be stored in my gun safe because it is about as dangerous as a handgun.'

The $200 device was built by adapting blue lasers from home cinema projectors.

Off topic: A couple of friends of mine were in an apartment complex parking lot getting stuff out of the trunk of his car when dipshit "A" sees a 10,000 candlepower (i think that was the rating) flashlight in the trunk and starts to play with it. He points it up towards a helicopter as a joke.

Sure enough the fucking helicopter circles back around and has a spotlight and starts shining it around the parking lot looking for them. They crawled under a van and hid. When i got there about 30 minutes after that there were 3 cops there looking for them.

WTF? Why is this such a huge deal? Could someone crash a helo by shining a flashlight (a flashlight not a laser) at it? Maybe Striker some of the military guys can answer this.

On topic: This laser seems like it could be very dangerous, thus, I WANT ONE!

I am former Army and was an Avionics Flight Systems Mechanic (Navigation 35Q) for UH-1, UH-60, AH-64 and UH-53's. The strength of that flashlight directed at an aircraft immediately brings radio communications of an emergency nature if you catch my drift.They take it as emergency personnel sending an SOS and since you don't really flag down a chopper it's pretty serious business.

The distraction could definitely lead to a crash of that aircraft or other in the vicinity.

Oh, i see. So it's not so much that it could "crash" the helo (although anything's possible, i guess) but more of they thought someone was in trouble/distress type of thing. I get it.

I wonder if it is actually breaking a specific law to do that... actually no i don't. I don't care. I wouldn't be stupid enough to do something like that.

I don't have the actual statute terminology in front of me but you get hit with a shit load of charges ranging from Interference of the flight of an aircraft (think Patriot Act charges!) to unlawful use of a distress signal (think fake 911 phone calls)

Better hope that it's only one aircraft because if there was a formation of helicopters, you could face charges for each aircraft (which you most definitely would to send a big message and be on the news).

Once above the Indian Ocean they let some of us stupid jarheads each take a turn "flying" a helo (The Sea Stallion for those interested). I'll tell you that you have to pay close attention and have great relfexes and control of your muscles. Between the collective, cyclic, and rudders (foot pedals), it takes a good deal of concentration to fly one straight and true and not spin. I can't imagine a sudden bright light out of nowhere helps that any. Not saying that an experience pilot would crash from such a thing, but it is entirely possible.
