I was at Rushmore 2 years ago in the middle of a cross-country drive. It was super crowded, but it was also Bike Week at Sturgis which is, as was mentioned, quite nearby. The sculptures were cool but a bit underwhelming - they looked smaller than were in my mind, but I can't say they were bad. I missed Crazy Horse, but have heard it is good.

Deadwood was fun, as a big fan of the show.

If you camp, get a spot somewhere in the Black Hills - gorgeous countryside that you'd have no idea was around unless you get off I-90 (or whatever it is) just a few miles.
