Hamster problem - - need to vent

So, about two and a half weeks ago, I decided to buy my girlfriend a hamster for her birthday. She fell in love with a black bear hamster:

So, we went home with Bernard the hamster. He shit all over the box he was in, but we figured that he was just nervous. We bought a cage, bedding, and a ball, and read up on hamster care for a few hours on the internet. We really took a liking to him, although he was a bit nippy, he had a fun personality and enjoyed monkey-barring around the cage.

12 days later, he was dead. Not sure what did it. He ate 1-2 pellets a day (as instructed by the Petsmart specialist) and got enough water, sleep and exercise. He just got limp, and when my girlfriend got back from class, he was dead. She did not take it well, but she was not too messed up over it.

One day later, her friends got her a new hamster, Gus. We had to visit my girlfriend's family this weekend, so we took the little guy home and bought him some treats. He seemed fine; he was somewhat active but slept constantly. One the way back to PA today, he died.

Thats two hamster dead in about two weeks. What the fuck.

Seems like Petsmart is selling faulty rodents. Anyone else ever have a problem like this?

I plan on marching into Petsmart tomorrow morning and getting a full refund for both. Fortunately, they have a return policy, but still. It was a $130 investment including the cage and toys. Fucking chain stores.

Sorry for your losses homie, but this made me laugh. Independent pet shops usually let you exchange within 60 days from my experience. But u gotta bring in the rodent corpse ofcoarse. Those big box pet shops usually load them up with anti-biotics and when they get off them they get sick pretty quickly.

Honestly, I'm laughing at the whole situation now. I mean, come on, two dead hamsters in two days? I almost wish I didn't toss the first guy in the dumpster on Wednesday night.

Can you imagine walking into a store and dramatically throwing two dead hamsters on the counter, demanding a refund?

Anyway, we put Gus in a box. I just spent twenty fucking dollars on toys for the fucker yesterday.

Interesting about the antibiotics. Thats going to make my girlfriend feel a lot better.

My little brothers had the same thing go wrong with their hamsters. My suggestion? Get a real pet like a dog or something. :D

that is a great idea. money is sort of an issue, but we're looking at getting a boxer in a few months.

the problem with buying dogs is there usually from puppy mills and end up with kennel cough and theyre just usually pretty sick from birth

Yeah, I don't want to support a puppy mill. Luckily, we know a breeder who is giving us a deal. Otherwise, we really would not be able to afford it at this point in time.
