Muhammad Cartoonist Attacked During Lecture
 

A Swedish artist who depicted the Islamic prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog was attacked today while delivering a university lecture on artistic freedom.

Lars Vilks was speaking at Uppsala University in Sweden when a man jumped onstage and head-butted him. According to The Associated Press, more than a dozen people had been attempting to disrupt Vilks' lecture at various points by shouting repeatedly.

Audience members had to pass through extensive security checks, which delayed the start of the talk. But almost as soon as it began, several individuals began yelling at Vilks.

As Stockholm News reported, in the first few tense minutes of his appearance, Vilks focused on controversial artistic images of Jesus, Jews and Muslims.

But it wasn't until he dimmed the lights and began showing a film by the Iranian artist Sooreh Hera, which portrayed the prophet Muhammad entering a gay bar, that a man leaped onstage and assaulted him.

These extremists are making the rest of the Muslims look really bad. People are going to see stuff like this and assume all Muslims are this crazy. Even though these probably aren't the far end of the extreme side, these people don't seem that far off.

I guess that since so one was beheaded at this thing classifies this as one of the funniest clips I've seen in a long time. Religon should just be a bunch of guidelines to help you be a better and more thoughtful HUMAN BEING.

I struggle with my Faith (or lack thereof) everyday. I can't seem to marry the concept of a Supreme Being who loves us and that same Being allowing us to get His/Hers/Its message so fucking distorted that we wind up killing each other over dogmatic minutiae.
Every day that goes by, i receive a little more confirmation that it's all just a tool to control us and rob us of whatever individuality and freedom we have.

Muslims make up 1.57 billion inhabitants of the planet. That's roughly one quarter of the entire population. When you think of the minorities involved in protests such as these, and as it's such a hot topic, the amount of news coverage always makes it seem like the radicalists are in the thousands, rather than the hundreds.

If every act of violence or hatred carried out in the name of every or any religion, or any tinpot cause was covered by the media, there'd be no time for anything else. The marches of the Orange order in Ireland and the actions of the teabaggers in Washington spring to mind.
