Should we drill for oil in wildlife preserves?

So I was watching a National Geographic show on the controversy of drilling for oil in ANWR and apparently if we suck all of the oil out of there it is enough to supply the entire country with oil for 6-18 months.

I don't really have a big problem with fucking up the environment if absolutely necessary, but my issue is the fact that it won't do anything but increase corporate profits. The reality is that gas prices will never go down. If you're going to fuck up the world I think it should benefit people other than oil company shareholders. Of course, I don't really have an issue with current gas prices. It's a penalty you pay for driving so much. People should change their driving habits if gas is too expensive.

My take on ANWR is that if it were in any other country it would be sucked by now with US blessings. I just don't see true environmentalists being territorial racists as well.

I am fat and need to ride a bike for the rest of my life anyway.

The underground reserve that Bush Sr. set up would provide 2 years of oil for US, at the rate that it is used at now.

Actually, according to Wikipedia, the low estimate of how much oil there is, is 4.3 billion barrels, enough to last about 12 years at a supply rate of 5%.

I say we drill it and use just enough to drive prices back down, if 5% does that, then that gives us another 12 years to work on alternatives and get them implemented.

Right, the 6-18 months is how long it would last if we get 100% of the country's oil there. So if we only get 5% of the country's oil there per year there how much is that going to decrease gas? Will it go down by 5% per gallon? Is an extra 15 cents per gallon worth it? Plus, what actually makes you think that the price of gas will go down? Doesn't it seem more likely that oil companies will just continue to charge the same amount while lowering their production costs?
