I d/l'ed it and watched it last night. Imho it was a great event. Penn is sick. It's a stream rip but it's only 357MB. Running time almost 3 hrs file is named .dsf rename to .rar. should come out as a .wmv file. If not rename final product after unraring to .wmv You must be a registered member of the forum to access the text file which has the download links to this file --- Admin . |

Are there any MMA fans on the boards? I'm pretty into it, but can't stand forums with a lot of people who consider themselves die-hard MMA guys. I prefer the "Let's pound beers and hope people get knocked out" crowd. Anyone in that Demographic here?
|
i am. i never buy the fights though only watch them when they come out on video

love the ufc and other organizations like it, except for the heavy weights when they fight the matches aren't as good as the smaller guys. i'm not technically inclined to remember everyone fighting, just to say there as some good fighters throwing down.
|
I am a HUGE MMA fan, and have been contemplating taking Brazilian Jiu Jitzu for some time now, I have been a fan of UFC since its inception, and love watching Fight Network. I wanted to go see UFC in Montreal, but I couldn't justify a 1000 dollar weekend to do it. I'll probably end up driving to see one in Cincinnati for a third of the cost.
|
Heavyweights are boring. It's rare, especially in the UFC now that there's been an exodus of big man talent, to get a HW fight worth watching. No Randy Couture? No thank you. I don't know if anyone has heard of it but YAMMA is a new upstar league that is having their first show tonight, all in the way of the old-school tournement format, meaning 3 fights to win the whole tourney. It'd be awesome, if they weren't having HWs do all the fighting. Shit's going to be two, big fat sweaty guys hanging on eachother by the end of it tonight. They are debuting a new ring set up though, with raised edges towards the edge of the cages to try and keep the hanging to a minimum, so that could be interesting. I'll probably just try and catch some on YouTube tomorrow.
Tyler-Fight Network? That must be a nice Canadian thing. What kind of shows do you get on that one? I was thinking about trying to go to the Uriajah Faber v. Jens Pulver WEC fight in June, but was having the same deal with trying to make costs work. It'd be awesome to go, but sometimes its hard to think of ponying up 250 bucks for a good seat. For the guys who do watch it: favorite fighters? |
Fight Network is on Bell ExpressVu in Canada, it is great. It has Wrestling (real and fake), Boxing, as well as MMA, for MMA it has KO, IFL, UFC, K1, TKO, Cage Rage among others and a slew of Amateur MMA events, I also have the Xtreme Sports channel which has quite a bit of MMA, but it's usually just IFL on late night programming.
As for my faves? Favorite Canadian fighter, George St Pierre, gotta rep the GSP, favorite American fighter, Mack Danzig, guy is a machine. |

Tyler: Who else would you be for? GSP is clearly the choice. I'd imagine that Cote has to be a little up there on your list as well though? I'm actually a big fan of the predator.
Leroy: I too get almost every UFC PPV. It gets old racking up the charges, but sometimes you just don't want to miss the potential of an amazing fight. Gonzaga/Couture rings a bell. How'd you get into rolling Jits? And where did you fine your MMA gym? As far as my fighters go: I'm a totally huge Couture fan, but sense he is not fighting right now I've been searching. I really digg Penn, Liddell (I know, it's ridiculous but he puts on a good show) Leben and Lesnar (both homer picks---used to be a huge WWE fan and being from PDX, Leben went to high school just around the corner in a suberb so a lot of people get behind him and the other Team Quest guys). I'm also huge on Florian right now. I'm looking forward to him doing some commentary pretty soon at the next UFC show. He's definitely got that wise ass in him that will make for it being awesome. |

They have classes for everything so I do MMA and BJJ at the same place. I think alot of finding a good place is to just look around. You can probably just do a Google search for MMA and the city you live in. Depending on the size of your city it should have at least a few locations available. My advice is to get a friend and just go check them out. Just about every gym will let you take a class for free to see if you like it. I'm personally a fan of the smaller, less fancy gyms because they seem a little more laid back and attract the people who are there to learn instead of to be seen. But like I said, just try as many as you can and see if you like any. Plus, if you take classes at 10 different places you'll get several free classes to decide if you even want to keep doing it. |
I need to teach you guys the art of Free To Air satellite.
|
What is Free to Air satellite?
|
I'll start a thread about it.
|
I appreciate that new thread---that's a pretty interesting concept, but I think I'm usually to drunk/lazy to get into shit like that. I'd probably end up lighting myself on fire. We should almost have an Admin merge the topics though, what, with all the Jeff Monson references over there in the Free to Air satellite. Snowman is awesome. I'm always a fan of anarchist pro-fighters.

To those who are interested in MMA, here are a few of my favorite sites to checkout.
http://www.mmapayout.com/ http://www.mmafrenzy.com/ Payout is pretty different. It looks at MMA from more of a business angle than other sites that just report fights. Frenzy is definitely more of a standard, fighting reporter site in the line of Sherdog, but to me, it's a lot easier on the eyes. Anybody else have any good sites they check out for MMA? |
I spend alot of time on these sites:
www.mmajunkie.com www.mmammania.com http://www.mmascraps.com/ - this is a great site to see fights if you miss them on TV or PPV |
I just got home from the gym, and I had a fucking blast. I strongly reccomend starting to train MMA if you really like to watch it. I think it makes it 10 times better once you start to understand just how technical it, plus for me the training is so much fun. Looking forward to going to the gym helps me get through the day at work.
|
Yeah, I've put some serious time with it, even going as far as to find a few different gyms back in December but ended up having to put it off because I tore my ACL and had the replacement surgery. So I'm finishingn up the rehab and I'm hoping by late summer to be at a place where I can get to learning how to roll. I mentioned earlier that I'm a short, stocky guy so if I can drop the weight I've put on with the torn ACL, I could be a sturdy little wrestler. Maybe some lay-and-pray is in my future, haha.

I figure if I can get to 185 I can cut down to 170 to weigh in. I might be better suited for 155 though since I'm only 5'10. I don't know if I can actually get to 155 lbs though. |

I didn't know if this deserved it's own thread, but probably not. For those interested in training here are a ton of Jiu Jitsu instructional videos.

The Gracies and their story of how they invented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which used to be called Gracie Jiu Jitsu, is amazing, even though Canadians are systematically taking over the sport.
GSP made Sera look like a little bitch. |
You probably shouldn't go so far as to say Canadians are taking over the sport of MMA. GSP is a beast and one of the best P4P, but there aren't many other fighters for Canada to be excited about.
|
I also have a ton of instruction MMA e-books if anyone is interested. I was going to upload all of them as one big file but together they are 800 mb. I have about 30 books so if there is one particular you are interested in let me know. Odds are I have it and I can upload them individually upon request.
|
Man, just when I was getting used to LeroyLips being the foremost authority on MMA here you go and switch your handle...at least Randal Graves is a beast...glad to see you're "bringing it back" haha. You going to start talking about how Frodo booted allover Bill's feet or whatever and make that hobbit looking guy puke? That'd be tight.
About the books though---do you have the Warrior MMA work out book? That one would be tight. Or maybe the BJ Penn book? |

Well I can't find anything by Rooney. I have the physical copy of his newest one, and it's OK if you can get past him saying "the warrior". I personally haven't been able to so I've quit reading it even though there does seem to be some pretty good fitness info in there. The book won't teach you how to fight, but it will get you into shape to fight.
But whatever, if I run across it I will get it for you. I have the BJ book uploading right now and shoud be able to get it posted tonight or tomorrow. If you want I can put up some other MMA conditioning books that have a simlilar theme to what Rooney teaches. Just let me know. |

So now that you have enough reading to keep you busy I will give you a few quick tips.
1. Flexibility is probably the most important part of conditioning for MMA. If you want to be any good you might need to spend as much as an hour a day stretching. While watching TV is a good time. Give Yoga a shot. It's fucking hard so it will work your cardio, it teaches you how to breath, and it is great for flexibility. 2. When weight training stick to the basics. Squat, bench press, incline bench press, shoulder press, and deadlifts are the most important. Try to do compound lifts, i.e. they work more than one body part. As far as MMA training goes your time could be better served focusing on things other than isolation lifts like bicep curls. And whatever you do, don't neglect your legs. Some the biggest muscles in your body are in your legs, so working legs actually helps you produce more testosterone which helps the rest of you grow too. You want to do a shit ton of reps. I like to start off with high weight, do as many as I can then lower the weight while taking a short rest and do as many as possible with the lower weight. Keep pulling off weight until you're down to the bar and can't do anymore. Those are called drop sets if you want to Google it. 3. Balance is huge too, so work on that too. I like to stand on one foot while raising one knee as high as possible. Do it both fast & slow. It will help your balance and your hip flexibility which is also very important. |
Hey Leroy, these links are all pretty good. I've actually got most of them downloaded and I'v ebeen going through them. Totally digging the advice, much thanks. On a different note: have you come across the Chuck Lidell or Matt Hughes biographies? I think Couture has one out too. I've been searching my balls off trying to find those things & haven't come across anything. It'd be awesome if you knew where those were or if you had them because they'd be an interesting read I'd imagine. Thanks for all your help. Time to go stretch :D
|
I just can't find the Chuck Liddell & Matt Hughes books anywhere. I have the Couture one and I'm uploading it right now. It's not a biography though. It's a training book that was written with the same two guys who cowrote BJs book.
