Here's one that might look a little odd. It's a Dingwall Z1 with a Spalted Maple Top in "Rastaburst" finish. These things start at $2,800
The cool thing about these basses is that they have a fanned fret system. Basically on top B string the scale is 37" and as you move towards the G string the scale becomes 33" i believe. This helps with intonation and gives the strings a more even feel. I've played one of these before and it really takes some getting used to. |

This was a buddy of mines I bought for 100 bucks because I was in love with the neck. It just feels so right. It has a slab body and no pickguard. I put Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders in it and this thing just booms. I sold the acoustic rig 6 months ago and got a Gallien Krueger 800RB with a 4x10 cab This was my first bass. I still have it and it helped me learn more about basses than any of my others. I've had this thing apart more times than I can remember. The neck warped on it so I bought another SquierII neck and through it on there. It really has that Paul Simonon vibe to it. |
wow that new jazz bass is sweet! I like it. Ha, when I posted my bass, I thought to myself, I wonder if he notices the Badass Bass Bridge.:) I also rewired it with top of the line pick ups, but I forgot the name. Imagine buying a Fender Pbass with the case for $300.00?! Brand new. Had to wait to them to order it. Now it has boot marks from the stage divers.

So after some more research I figured out why that Aerodyne neck feels so comfortable and familiar to me compared to other Jazz basses I've played. While it has the normal 1.5" Jazz bass width at the nut, the radius on the fingerboard is like that of a P-Bass (7.25" as opposed to the 9.25" of normal Jazz basses and vintage Fender guitars) so it feels more rounded while being thinner. This is also the reason I don't care for Spectors and Warwicks. Spector's fingerboard radius is a wicked flat 16" and Warwicks are about the same.

The 'Closet Classic' is a pre-distressed repro-ax, I believe - a friend picked up a 'Relic' level Strat a while back that looked like it was beat to shit. kinda like buying pre-ripped jeans (but made in the Fender custom shop to the original specs). |
