Best Hip-Hop & Rap Artists

Think about the best of the best ala Eric Roberts circa the eighties. Who brought the most to the table and who is still carrying the torch into the future of the genre.

I'm gonna say Jay Z for the fact of longevity. He has had stellar production throughout his career and has seen his lyrics respected by the streets, critics and the mainstream (15 year old girls who can repeat the entire first verse of "Big Pimpin")

As for the underground I gotta say C.L. Smooth for almost the same reasons as stated above sans the mainstream success.

Let the games begin.

In typical white guy fashion, my favorite rappers/mc's/hip hop artists are:

Aesop Rock
Busdriver
Mos Def
Del The Funky Homosapien

Also gots mad respect for Tupac and Bone Thugz, nigga.

Seriously though I like Tupac and Bone Thugz-N-Harmony

Nothing Wrong With That

Gallow at least you rolled through with some names that a 14 year white girl wouldn't recognize. Really though all good choices including Tupac and Bone. Seriously I'm pretty sure that Tupac's "Pain" and Mos Def's "Travellin Man" are two of the greatest songs to come out in the last two decades. I think we will be constantly be fighting the exposure vs sellout syndrome for most of these underground rappers forever. I'm from Texas and I used to love just about every rapper from Houston...until they got signed. On a side note, thanks for replying Gallow. It's interesting to see other people's tastes.

Rakim has always been on the top of my list on this debate.

pretty much every hip hop artist I've met has been really cool and down to earth. A lot of those guys would be next on the list. There are plenty who are all about their ego but I don't listen to any of that crap anyway.

This guy has been doin' the nasty since the early 70's and still kickin' to this day, 8-12 years before 2Live Crew or Digital Underground gained notoriety.

He was in my area for a scheduled performance last year but I missed out.
