I find the concept of North Korea fascinating. The entire country is completely brainwashed from birth, and due to the massively overbearing control of the dictatorship, any potential for free thought is quashed before it's born. If your government tells you that your country is perfect, and supplies everything you will ever need, why aspire to be anything but what they tell you to be?

Let's not forget, Kim Jong Il isn't their leader. His father is, even though he's been dead for a number of years now. Kim Jong Il (who's birth was heralded by a double rainbow and a talking bird, apparently) simply passes on his father's will to the populace...

Cool they have a fully stocked duty free shop. Who says those crazy N. Koreans don't have quality goods and are in starvation. Only liars and naysayers. Dear Leader lives!

for anyone interested in more info about this country i highly recommended watching 'the vice guide to travel- north korea'(easily found on the internets). its an absolutely incredible look at one of the most bizarre places on earth.

I'd love to go there. For years I've been planting seeds with my newspaper editor friends so they find a way to send me. I really don't know why, but this place fascinates me.

I watched the three NK parts and I want to go now!

It's much worse than New Jersey. Much worse. I've been to both places and I'd still choose New Jersey over North Korea.

While the mindless are, in fact, the majority, there are significant number who want out. Every year people attempt to cross into China. They have a better chance of getting into China than escaping to the South.

Most people in North Korea live with rationed electricity or rolling blackouts. There are still active jamming efforts to block outside radio and TV from reaching in country. The place is like a ghost town after dark. Very spooky. The rural areas are only slightly better.

I've been there about 5 years ago. What can I say, It's like time has stopped for 20 years but the same time they have crazy technology, like a sci-fi movie. You'd be surprised to see all the people using the same outfits, there is no individualism in there.

Everyone should read it if north korea fascinates you. It is one of the best books I've read/listened to in a really long time.

NK has always fascinated me too. The people are even more isolated than someplace like Cuba. Just think, to escape to China, of all places, is a dream.

The thing that is so striking about the pictures is the big halls, the beautiful subway station, the wide streets, the areas obviously set up for folks to gather in, that are absolutely bare. Not even that there are no people, but that there is no "humanity". They look like no human has ever touched them. They're like paintings by someone who is technically proficient, but without any passion or feeling.
