You should head out to the northeastern part of Italy at least once. Should be what, a 4-5 hour train ride? Not only Venezia but go to Padova, Verona, the Dolomite Mtn Range around Bolzano, and Vicenza where I once grew up. I think the people are much friendlier there than ones central and further west.

As for racists, Italians are like that no matter where you go whether it's the south or the north. I am not surprised if half the people met have something very derogatory to say for N. Africans, Albanians, and especially Gypsies. I will say more so against Gypsies in Naples than anywhere in Italy.
