Quick little story. The Song dynasty of China was a time when Chinese culture flourished. Most citizens studied the arts, and more and more political positions were filled by poets and artists. Soon it was looked down upon to serve in the military or carry a weapon. Eventually the armies of the Song consisted entirely of derelicts who had no education or job prospects. That made it fairly easy for Genghis Khan and the Mongols to storm into China in the early 1200's and eventually take over the whole country.

That's actually a pretty natural thing. Before humans came, animals like wolves and snakes kept the rodent populations in check.
