'Knuckleheads' celebrate 25th anniversary of miniature Statue of Liberty on Susquehanna River

Examining a photo from the middle-of-the-night deed, you expect to spot beer cans.
The gang of 20-somethings had just hoisted Lady Liberty onto her perch atop an old railroad pier in the middle of the Susquehanna River.
Yet no beers were cracked until later.
Gene Stilp led a group onto the Susquehanna River in 1986 to hoist Lady Liberty atop an old railroad pier.
?We were 32 feet in the air, and it was pitch black, and we had to be very careful,? says Gene Stilp, the ringleader of what seemed more stunt than enduring act of patriotism.
Now Stilp is marking the 25th anniversary of the statue, located on a stretch of river just north of Harrisburg.
He arranged a commemorative stamp cancellation and a commemorative coin, and he?s conducting a contest for a song about the statue.
?Of all the replicas across America, it?s one of the larger ones,? says Stilp, 61, who?s also inclined to think it occupies the best location.
Stilp got the idea in 1986, during the run-up to the 100th birthday of the real Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
He built it out of plywood and old venetian blinds in a friend?s garage in Harrisburg.
Hoisting the 450-pound object onto the pier, without drawing attention from authorities, was bound to be a tricky and potentially deadly feat.
It involved about a dozen people. Stilp says it wasn?t hard to recruit them.
?I?d say, ?Come on over to the garage. I have something to show you. I need people who can keep a secret, and who have the skills to do this,?? he says.
On July 1, 1986, just after dinner time, they towed the statue through Harrisburg on a boat trailer. Stilp was surprised it didn?t arouse much curiosity.
It was still light when they assembled along the Susquehanna. They loaded the statue on the biggest jon boat they could get.
As darkness fell they paddled out into the river ? two boats and two canoes...

the actual statue of liberty was supposed to rest near the pyramids in egypt but the egytian government declined because they didn't want something so new near the pyramids. so the 3 that built the statue agreed to ask the US if they would accept it and the government agreed to placing it in NYC where it is today

Alcohol Doesn't Kill Brain Cells, Just Memories
Interesting news for all you blackout drunks out there: Booze doesn't kill brain cells so much as interfere with brain receptors which can prevent memories from forming. Or so say researchers in the latest issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. ?Alcohol isn?t damaging the cells in any way that we can detect,? senior investigator Charles F. Zorumski told ScienceBlog. ?As a matter of fact, even at the high levels we used [in their experiment], we don?t see any changes in how the brain cells communicate. You still process information. You?re not anesthetized. You haven?t passed out. But you?re not forming new memories.?

So, yeah, it seems that alcohol doesn't kill your brain cells. Instead it just messes with receptors in the brain, "which in turn manufacture steroids that inhibit long-term potentiation (LTP), a process that strengthens the connections between neurons and is crucial to learning and memory." No biggie!

It's also worth noting that ?It takes a lot of alcohol to block LTP and memory,? according to Zorumski (though other drugs can help). And ?the mechanism isn?t straightforward. The alcohol triggers these receptors to behave in seemingly contradictory ways, and that?s what actually blocks the neural signals that create memories. It also may explain why individuals who get highly intoxicated don?t remember what they did the night before.?

And there's more good news: The team also figured that since they could block LTP they could also probably preserve it (at least in rats) with drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (which are often "prescribed to reduce a man?s enlarged prostate gland"). So they did, and it seems to have done something. Next up the team is looking to see if 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors or similar substances could one day be used to help preserve memories in people.

Salt is good for you, booze doesn't kill brain cells... what else did our parents lie to us about? Does masturbation really cause hair to grown on your palms, because we've been dying to try that for years.

Giant Boner-Inducing Spider Rampages in Supermarket

A five-inch Brazilian Wandering Spider, the most venomous spider in the world, which "can also cause priapism in humans" stowed away in a box of bananas and leaped out in a German grocery store, running through the aisles and causing pandemonium on Friday. After shutting down the store down for three days, a team of 30 wildlife experts failed to find the spider. They did, however, spray so many pesticides on the premises that they're pretty sure it's dead by now, unless it left the supermarket and is roaming the German countryside as we speak. No injuries have been reported. Brazilian Wandering Spiders have previously stowed away in bananas destined for Tulsa and Chatham. The "aggressive" spider's venom can cause excruciating pain, paralysis, asphyxiation, and painful erections that last many hours and can lead to impotence in humans.
