I've learned to write the number down a piece of paper before going in the store. I've never had to deal with oil myself until I got my Toyota since there is a longer time between suggested changes (7,000 miles vs. 3,000).

The first time the light came on for me, I was going to a rich cousin's wedding reception. There I was all dressed up pouring oil in the hole thing hoping to god I didn't splash myself and thankful my car was new enough where it was still clean under the hood. :evillol
