I take no side in this debate as I feel that no man (or woman) has the right to tell a woman what she can or can't do with her body, but I must remind you that if the abortion issue falls to the states, it will be just like wet county / dry county. If you can't get your liquor in your county because it's a dry county and they prohibit the sale of it, then you just drive over the county or state line and get it somewhere else.
The reason abortion has always been a nation issue from the early days is for just this reason. Unlike the gay and lesbian marriage issue which is both a Political and Social Issue requiring either total acceptance from all state on an individual level or a Constitutional Amendment banning, abortion is a Political and Moral Issue. It is one of the few times the church and state come into conflict, something our forefather tried to avoid. For all the talking that politicians make on the issue, to overturn R vs. W would deny women their Civil Rights. So the issue of when life starts and protecting the unborn child continues on.
Abortion has always existed as far back as before the Egyptians. If a woman wants to rid herself of the unborn fetus, there have always been was ways. Before abortions were legal one option was the Back Alley Abortion. Many a woman has died because of an unscrupulous practitioner with dirty instruments or a lack of knowledge. Another is a painful self-abortion using a coat hanger among other things.
Many feel it is better to embrace a system of safe and healthy haven where non-bias informative education can be give before inform consent is obtained. The issue there is that neither side trusts the other to perform a non-bias structured pre-abortion educational conversation. So until mutual trust or pervailing opinions change, the debate will rage on.
