But the way the SC interpreted it the amendment (which I somewat agree with) is that the open display of the 10 commandments establishes a religion. Unfortunately, this is where we range in to the ridiculous. If I remember correctly, the SC created some sort of standard, so if one type of religious symbol is displayed, if another type is also displayed within a certain distance, everything is fine.
Listen, the Atheist who is suing the government left and right for In God We Trust on money, crosses on courthouses, etc is an absolute asshole. I don't have a problem with moments of silence (although I do have a problem if prayers are read over the intercom), money with God on it, saying God in the pledge, etc. It's tradition and even though many of the founders strongly believe in the separation of church and state, they were very religious.
I believe that the two should be separate, not because I am an Atheist, but because I am a Libertarian. The government (especially the federal govt) should stay out of moral issues at any costs. Homosexual marriage is a classic example. There is nothing in the constitution deciding one way or the other, which means the federal govt should have no say in the matter. But the religious right have pushed that agenda. R v W...again, no real constitutional application. So what we have now is a poorly decided law cobbled together because this shouldn't be in the federal domain in the first place.
