Had a Jetta from 86-97 thing drove like it was on rails and was awesome in snow.
Repairs for imports can be expensive, but they tend to need fewer repairs than domestics.
(The week I got the Jetta a co-worker bought a domestic something-or-other and was telling me parts were so expensive on VW, etc. A year later he'd junked the domestic because it was constantly in for repair - the VW gave me over 10yrs and 300,000 K of service.)

Unfortunately, however, nowadays every VW I see on the hiway is driven as if by your grandma - I think the ads for " Drivers Wanted " was a real appeal.

To date have had a Mazda Protege since 2000 and its give me no grief at all with 270,000+ on it.

VW or Mazda are my faves, though of late all VW's I see on the hiway are driven by grandmothers or something.
I had a Jetta from 86-97 with over 300,000k on it and it drove like it was on rails. Best thing in snow I've ever had.
Jettas got a bit pricy for me though, so in 2000 I got a Protege which has given me no greif at all to date with a bit over 275,000K on it.
As to expensive repairs - yes they cost more, but in my limited experience, they need less than domestics.
Had a co-worker buy a Chrysler the same month I got the VW, and he ranted on about how expensive my repairs would be, etc.
A year later he'd sold it because it was just one thing after another.

My .003 cents after deductions.

Thanks for all the help.

To sum things up I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee that gets shitty gas mileage but is 4 wheel drive and is big enough to move my dogs around when I need to. It is getting older and more things are starting to break. I would like to keep it for the two reasons listed above. I really want something that gets better gas mileage but also has good looks and a little bit of kick. I love cars and view them as more than something to get me from point A to point B. I never thought of an Acura so I will have to look into them. I wonder if they are in my price range?
