In most states in the south, you walk in, pick our your gun, they make a call to the fbi, you pay, and walk out with your brand new firearm. When I bought my first shotgun, I was surprised there wasn't a 5 day waiting period, but I was out the door within 20 minutes.

My concealed weapons permit was a different story. It took longer and had more paperwork, but it still wasn't hard to obtain.

In bigger cities it is my understanding that permits are required for all firearms. I had to register my rifles and shotty when I lived in Columbus, but I don't have to where I am now. I think it's the larger quantity of targets that ask/need/practically beg to get shot.
