A visit to Tokyo’s spouse introduction vending machine

A rent-a-spouse vending machine? Sounds like another dose of wacky-Japan fake news that the foreign media likes to fall for, hook, line, and sinker.

Vending machines and “people rental” services are among the most popular topics for those ridiculous news stories, which tend to focus on just a single example and then extrapolate from that outlier to make general pronouncements about a society of 120+ million people.

So we’re at pains to point out that we are not doing that here.

But there is apparently a vending machine where you can “get yourself” a spouse.

It is located in the less-than-salubrious environments of the neighborhood near Kamata Station, an area that most of us know only as somewhere that the train passes through on the way to Haneda Airport.

We recently read a photo report following a divorcé’s trek to find this legendary vending machine in the hopes that it would help him find love again. These are the photos from his intrepid visit . . .



The vendor is located about a block or so from the station rotary, tucked behind a couple of other vending machines and a bank of lockers.

The inconspicuous vending machine features a standard top row of cheap drinks and then two whole rows of identical-looking pink cans, available for ¥1,000.





But they are not actually identical, because they each represent a different woman. Her age is noted on the top of the can.

Before you start thinking this is koonago shrinking women hentai made real and that those cans contain real ladies looking for love, the “cans” are actually consultation fees for a matchmaking service called Matching Advisor Press.

Pay for one of the cans and you get to see a photo of the woman and receive more information. Matching Advisor Press’s office is apparently in the building right about the vending machines.

Another machine also has white cans, which are guys available for any women out there looking for love.



If the man or woman takes your fancy at the interview, you can arrange a proper introductory meeting at a restaurant for ¥15,000. But if you don’t like the look of their photo, the service will generously refund the original ¥1,000 you paid for their “can.” (Such services also often demand a substantial additional fee if you end up marrying the person you are introduced to, but Matching Advisor Press has now dropped this — either out of desperation or generosity.)

So, not quite a “buy a spouse” vending machine, it’s essentially like an advertising gimmick for a local service and/or a euphemistic, accessible way to begin your relationship with a matchmaking service, which some people may find intimidating (though there were a very typical way to meet a spouse in decades past).

When the divorcé visited, her found that all the cans were “out of stock,” indicating that the service is either very popular right now or that the service is so unpopular that they haven’t got enough candidates on their books to restock those introductory cans.

SOD Land porn theme park bar closes after arrest of Soft on Demand president

You would think that a company as large and successful as Soft on Demand would have an army of lawyers and legal advisors on retainer, and that they would consult them carefully when launching a major and costly new project. Or perhaps they did and their team simply wasn’t doing their job right.

Either way, our proverbial jaw hit the floor when we read this news.

On March 16, it was announced by Tokyo Metropolitan Police that the 40-year-old CEO of SOD — the biggest porn producer in Japan — has been arrested for violation of the fuzoku law. You might presume this is related to prostitution, but it’s actually more mundane.

In 2020, we reported on the opening of SOD Land, a kind of porn theme park bar complex in Kabukicho that pluckily opened in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.







Customers can meet and interact with actual porn performers, including some of the top names in the industry, across five floors in the heart of Shinjuku. Facilities include a basement standing bar with “female employees,” a “semi-standing” bar with sex workers and hostesses, the SyainBar on the third floor for talking with famous adult video stars, and the Silent Bar on the fourth floor for watching swimwear-clad performers through a see-through screen.

Because of the nature of the establishment and its operating hours beyond midnight (though it was officially open only until 11 pm), SOD Land qualifies as a kind of hostess club and so requires a special permit under the fuzoku law (which, despite the name, covers all kinds of businesses like bars and clubs, not just brothels).

SOD is not new to this kind of venture. In 2018, it opened the Tachi Syain standing bar with “female employees” in Akihabara and then SyainBar on the ground floor of its own HQ in Nakano, west Tokyo, until 2022. These were projects to offer fan service and also provide second careers for AV stars.

What’s new this time, and which had led to the trouble with police, is that SOD Land offers what is legally classified as “entertainment/hospitality for customers,” not just serving food and drink.

When SOD Land opened, there was a lot of publicity about hygiene and ventilation and the immense efforts organizers were taking to keep people safe during the pandemic, but it seems they did not take this legal dimension of the venture into consideration.

The police apparently told SOD in December last year that they needed to comply with the law, so this really does seem like a massive oversight on the part of such a major corporation. (To be fair, given the massive logistical repercussions of the controversial new porn law that was introduced last year, perhaps the company was simply too preoccupied with adjusting its production schedules and contracts.)

Along with the company president, the 27-year-old SOD Land manager was also arrested. (Incidentally, we are pleased that relatively young people are in such senior positions in a major company, which perhaps shows how the adult industry offers opportunities that more conventional industries don’t. On the other hand, SOD’s current woes are not the best advertisement for young management.)

Yesterday, following the arrests, SOD Land announced it was temporarily closing, along with the Tachi Syain standing bar in Akihabara.

The potential loss of income for SOD due to these closures, even if temporary, is considerable. Police estimate that SOD Land made ¥600 million in sales over 2.5 years.

Fictosexuals in Japan band together fight discrimination

Over four years ago, the media in Japan and globally went bananas about a Japanese man who “married” a virtual character.

These stories are catnip to editors who love “sexless Japan” and “wacky Japan” content. The tale of Akihiko Kondo and his love for popular Vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku was too much to resist, and the world lapped it up.




For little discernible reason, Kondo (who is now 40) is back in the news.

The Mainichi Shimbun sat down for a fresh interview with him and find out how his “marriage” is going. (The newspaper also published a follow-up story in January 2022.) Apparently, Kondo is still committed to his marriage (or method acting), calling out the typical Japanese greetings to his “wife” when he returns home in the evenings and wishing her a good morning when he rises on a new day.

In a desperate bid to justify this clickbait, the Mainichi have tried to connect Kondo’s story with the wider societal phenomenon of fictosexuals — the scientific term for a paraphilia (fetish) in which the person is attracted to fictional characters.

According to a 2017 survey, 10% of male and female students in Japan from junior high school to university said they have had romantic feelings for a character in anime or game franchises. And if you’re struggling to get laid at college in Japan, it might be because 17.1% of your female cohorts are apparently in love with a fictional character.

“It is not unusual for people to develop affection for characters,” pronounces a sociologist quoted in the article who has been researching the issue since the 1990s.

And it seems that we need to get more woke about fictosexuality, because though other sexual minorities have enjoyed greater tolerance, the likes of Akihiko Kondo still suffer from discrimination and prejudice.

“I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told, ‘It’s disgusting’ or ‘You’re sick.’ I can’t help it if people say they are offended by the way I spend time with a character,” Kondo bemoans.




Well, the fictosexuals strike back.

Last month, Kondo and his peers launched the Association of Fictosexuality to hold meetings, exchange views, and expand public understanding. It aims to be a “place of comfort” for fictosexuals. And no doubt to provide reporters with an easy pool of ready interviewees whenever the next wacky Japan article is needed.

“I would like society to become a place where people can easily hold weddings with their beloved characters as a milestone in their lives,” Kondo is quoted as saying.




“There are many people connected to this issue who are having a hard time,” the sociologist continues. “We believe it’s necessary to call for social consensus against discrimination and prejudice toward minorities.”

The truth is that Kondo suffered rejection from real women — he reportedly told seven women over the years that he loved them but they all rejected him — and bullying at work. He sought refuge in a virtual idol while he was off work. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that (and healthier than drugs or booze!) and he’s not harming anyone, but should we be celebrating and sentimentalizing this life choice like the Mainichi and others do?

Here at Tokyo Kinky, we never mock anyone’s fetish or choice. To each their own. However, it seems to us, armchair shrinks that we are, that there are other issues in his life that Kondo is compensating for by “marrying” Hatsune Miku. And we reckon that’s the real story here, which the Mainichi interview hints at but never seems to really tackle head on, seemingly intent rather on not offending anyone.

In a moment of either clear-eyed realism or a chilling revelation of cognitive dissonance, Kondo openly remarks that “I don’t think Miku has any human rights.” Does that mean she doesn’t have to consent?
