Ice Cream Fondue Pizza promises great taste of ice cream and mushrooms together

This summer, we’ve been seeing some, well let’s call them…unorthodox pizzas in Japan. In June there was Pizza Hut Japan’s Weiner Coffee Pizza, and earlier this month we got our hands, and mouths, on Domino’s Pizza Japan’s Pickles Pizza.

But Nagoya-based chain Aoki’s Pizza, which also has branches in Aichi, Gifu, and Mie Prefectures, isn’t about to get out-weirded by the bigger chains. Aoki’s is, after all, the company that brought us such wonders as the 18-meat Meat Mountain pizza sandwich and the horror-themed Bloody Zombino pizza. Their latest creation?

The Ice Cream Fondue Pizza



Aoki’s describes it as a “summer adventure pizza,” and you’ll have to have an adventurous palate to try it. The uniquely shaped crust forms a raised crater in the center, which serves as a vessel for vanilla ice cream that you dip your slice of pizza into, similar to plunking morsels of food into a fondue pot.

The provided vanilla ice cream is from Haagen-Dazs, so you can expect a rich, quality cream. The Ice Cream Fondue Pizza also comes with maple syrup and chocolate sauce, if you want even more sweet sensations to tickle your taste buds.

What makes the Ice Cream Fondue Pizza especially strange, though, is that while it’s the sweet elements that set it apart, it’s not a pure dessert pizza. Before you dip the slices in ice cream or drizzle syrup/sauce on them, they just have the classic ingredients of mozzarella cheese pepperoni, and sliced mushrooms. So yes, with the Ice Cream Fondue Pizza, Aoki’s is proposing that you get mushroom, pork, and ice cream in your mouth all at the same time.

The Ice Cream Fondue Pizza is available in limited quantities for a limited time, and only in medium size, priced at 2,380 yen.

It’s worth noting that you get the Haagen-Dazs ice cream in its own separate tub, so that you can pour it into the “fondue” area just before you start eating. That also means that you could use other ice cream flavors is you’d prefer, say, a matcha or Popping Shower-flavor Ice Cream Fondue Pizza. Alternatively, you could fill the crater up with melted cheese for a more traditional-style “fondue.” Heck, fill it with curry roux and eat the pizza like it’s nan bread, if that’s what you’re in the mood for.

That’s the great thing about eating something as crazy and unprecedented as an Ice Cream Fondue Pizza: No one can tell you you’re eating it the wrong way.

SOD Land porn theme park to reopen after five-month closure

Japan’s porn giant Soft on Demand seems finally to have recovered from one of the most bizarre and shocking screw-ups in their history.

SOD Land in Kabukicho suddenly closed down in March this year after police discovered it was violating the law on fuzoku (“amusement businesses”) establishments, which covers hostess clubs, brothels, and so on.

Billed as an “adult theme park,” SOD Land allows visitors to meet and interact with actual Japanese porn performers (and others like sex workers and hostesses) in various ways across five floors, including bars and a space for viewing performers in swimwear.

SOD now reports that it has obtained a proper fuzoku business permit and is reopening SOD Land on Thursday, August 10, from 6 p.m.



What is so strange about it is that SOD clearly spent huge amounts of money on the project, from the expensive location and building to the high-profile adult video stars they hired, and these costs were exasperated by the fact that the company bravely decided to open the venue during the height of the pandemic in late 2020 and had to integrated very sophisticated anti-Covid measures and technology.

Despite all that, no one ever seemed to raise the possibility that they weren’t covered legally.

This is also bizarre since Japan’s rules about registering businesses with police under the fuzoku law are not a little-known legal detail by any means, plus SOD had ample experience with operating bars and so on.

Even more bizarrely, police actually warned SOD — the biggest name in the adult industry — that it was violating the fuzoku law in December 2022, so the company had plenty of time to get its act together and avoid this trouble.

We presume some heads did roll at SOD over this incredibly costly failure, which was largely related to the operating hours, which meant it was violating the late-night restrictions in the fuzoku law unless it had notified and got approval from the authorities.

In the publicity for the reopening, SOD has acknowledged its mistake and said it has “firmly reflected” on its howler.

The fourth-floor space where visitors could view scantily clad porn stars is apparently still under renovation and won’t be open yet.

We haven’t heard about the three people who were arrested in March by Tokyo police, which included the company president and the SOD Land manager. We presume they were eventually released without charge, since it doesn’t seem sensible to prosecute these individuals over a collective error — and one that can be relatively easily fixed.

But who knows. The Japanese police and prosecutors have a mindset of their own. The media reports in March said the police had referred only the corporation itself to the prosecutors.

SOD Land is a curious project too because it both represents the ongoing gentrification of Kabukicho — once almost a no-go zone except if you were visiting a host/hostess club or brothel — and the stabilization of the district’s reputation, since it is a stylish, accessible facility and yet is obviously part of the adult industry.

Typhoon washes away giant phallus from Shinto shrine

Last week, Japan was hit by Typhoon Lan. While Tokyo just suffered a bit of rain and wind, the west side of Honshu had more serious weather conditions, and public transport ground to a halt. And before that, Typhoon Khanun hit Kyushu and Okinawa. ‘Tis the season.





One small consequence that nonetheless caught our attention, though, was for the sacred wooden phallus at Inyoseki Shrine in Miyazaki.

It was washed away by the typhoon and is reportedly floating in a small lake by a dam!

So if you encounter a giant cock in the water, don’t panic and try to get it back to where it belongs. Your help is appreciated by the gods.

The fertility shrine, located in the city of Kobayashi, is built on a site where there are two special rocks in the Sannomiya Gorge along the Iwase River shaped, respectively, like male and female reproductive organs. There are also smaller examples of this kind of culture too, like phallic sculptures in fields that are probably linked to ancient agricultural fertility and harvest rites.

Yashio Hihokan: One Japanese man’s private sex doll museum

When you’ve been at this game as long as us, you start to see patterns and cycles in the mainstream media’s reporting about Japan — including by the Japanese media itself.

Perennially, we spot articles about sexless Japan based on a new survey with minimal data. Sometimes even the same content reappears, slightly rejigged for a fresh article.

In 2017, we reported on the private sex museum run by a photographer from his own home.

Yoshitaka Hyodo’s extraordinary museum in Yashio, Saitama, is still around and going strong. It has received the latest boost to its publicity with a recent splashy writeup in the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.

"Japan holds a reputation for having some of the world’s most eccentric and offbeat subcultures, and one man is pushing the boundaries by transforming his modest two-story home into a private sex doll museum."

Yashio Hihokan — hihokan are Japanese sex museums — is mostly filled with the photographer’s collection of sex dolls and “also a mesmerizing assortment of other erotica, creepy exhibits and antique collectibles.”



“Since I was young, I have been fascinated by cyborgs and artificial life forms and before I knew it, my fate became intertwined with such things, and my home has become a treasure trove,” says 49-year-old Hyodo.

As the article pointedly notes, he lives alone.

"Hyodo’s journey to becoming a doll collector began over 20 years ago after he discovered a mannequin in a vacant lot dump. The discovery sparked a desire in him to be surrounded by dolls, and he has since collected around 50 of them, including sex dolls, mannequins, and various other anatomical models."

Around half of the dolls were personally purchased; others were donated. Many are made by Orient Industry, the leading name in sex dolls in Japan, specializing in high-end silicone dolls like the Ange.



This is quite some “hobby,” though. Orient Industry’s dolls, which allow for a wide range of customization, retail at a cost of several thousand dollars each!

As we reported in 2017, the museum is open to the public at irregular interviews. He received 300 visitors this year, including from abroad.

Hyodo also holds photography exhibitions from time to time, and his work has been shown in Tokyo and Paris.

He is something of a campaigner for subcultures too, forming the Great Japan Love Doll Party to fight broadcasters and media platforms who paint him in a negative light. We hope we don’t become a target of his ire! Rest assured, we have nothing but respect for someone who could transform their personal affection for dolls into such an awesome achievement.



A documentary about Hyodo was released in autumn 2022.
