As many of you know I have spent a lot of time in China. It's weird, some pages like youtube, you cannot get at all. But I get on DSF no problem. Download porn, TV shows anything. It is just very slow. To me it's ridiculous to even worry about the internet. There is so much shit going on right in the streets that no one even cares about. But what if these US companies did not sell their filtering technology to China? The CCP would just shut down the internet to private citizens. At least with what they have they can work around the filters to an extent. Maybe they can't see youtube, but you can IM anything you want to someone. Just put pictures of my cat in the file name or something. The CCP is trying to prevent something that is inevitable. And that is they are not going to last doing business the way they are. The people there are getting to technologically educated. They will never be able to keep the flow of information from coming in completely.

but to me, its one thing to censor.......its another thing for an american company to turn over private email accounts.

Free service email accounts are not legally considered private. Especially in countries like China where the government legally has the right to access any and all data and voice including that entering and exiting the country.

Sure, Gmail, Yahoo and HotMail say they won't release your info, but they add that they will not do so unless required by law where you or the servers are.

"china legally has the right". well no shit they do, they are a totalitarian regime that has total control over the country. its a blatant invasion of privacy (anti-democratic in and of itself) and it is used to help stifle democratic activist.

That's the problem to me. We shouldn't be turning over people who are going to be persecuted for their political beliefs.
