I think they are great drivers. I feel pretty safe even though it looks like someone is going to get killed. The fact that more people do not get hurt is a testament. But if you threw an American driver in there all hell would probably break loose.
I put some video of a drive I took back in September on youtube. It's kind of long and uneventful, but you can get an idea of what it is like to drive on the country roads in China.

I was too drunk to watch that last night but that was interesting. There's all kinds of vehicles and people all over the road. That car in front of you made some funny lane changes to pass a car and then made a left from the opposing side of the road. No lines in the road either.
