James Caan, the curly-haired tough guy known to movie fans as the hotheaded Sonny Corleone of “The Godfather” and to television audiences as both the dying football player in the classic weeper “Brian’s Song” and the casino boss in “Las Vegas,” has died. He was 82.

His manager Matt DelPiano said he died on Wednesday. No cause was given.

“Jimmy was one of the greatest. Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, he was funny, loyal, caring and beloved,” DelPiano said. “Our relationship was always friendship before business. I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years."

Rob Reiner, who directed Caan in “Misery” tweeted, “I loved working with him. And the only Jew I knew who could calf rope with the best of them.”

A football player at Michigan State University and a practical joker on production sets, Caan was a grinning, handsome performer with an athlete’s swagger and muscular build. He managed a long career despite drug problems, outbursts of temper and minor brushes with the law.

Caan had been a favorite of Francis Ford Coppola since the 1960s, when Coppola cast him for the lead in “Rain People.” He was primed for a featured role in “The Godfather” as Sonny, the No. 1 enforcer and eldest son of Mafia boss Vito Corleone.

Sonny Corleone, a violent and reckless man who conducted many killings, met his own end in one of the most jarring movie scenes in history. On his way to another job, Corleone stops at a toll booth that he discovers is unnervingly empty of customers. Before he can escape he is cut down by a seemingly endless fusillade of machine-gun fire. For decades after, he once said, strangers would approach him on the street and jokingly warn him to stay clear of toll roads.

Caan bonded with Brando, Robert Duvall and other cast members and made it a point to get everyone laughing during an otherwise tense production, sometimes dropping his pants and “mooning” a fellow actor or crew member. Despite Coppola’s fears he had made a flop, the 1972 release was an enormous critical and commercial success and brought supporting actor Oscar nominations for Caan, Duvall and Al Pacino.

Caan was already a star on television, breaking through in the 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song,” an emotional drama about Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo, who had died of cancer the year before at age 26. It was among the most popular and wrenching TV movies in history and Caan and co-star Billy Dee Williams, who played Piccolo’s teammate and best friend Gale Sayers, were nominated for best actor Emmys.

After “Brian’s Song” and “The Godfather,” he was one of Hollywood’s busiest actors, appearing in “Hide in Plain Sight” (which he also directed), “Funny Lady” (opposite Barbra Streisand), “The Killer Elite” and Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two,” among others. He also made a brief appearance in a flashback sequence in “The Godfather, Part II.”

But by the early 1980s he began to sour on films. He had begun to struggle with drug use and was devastated by the 1981 leukemia death of his sister, Barbara, who until then had been a guiding force in his career.

He returned to full-fledged stardom opposite Kathy Bates in “Misery” in 1990.

Once again in demand, Caan starred in “For the Boys” with Bette Midler in 1991 as part of a song-and-dance team entertaining U.S. soldiers during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. The following year he played a tongue-in-cheek version of Sonny Corleone in the comedy “Honeymoon in Vegas."

Other later films included “Flesh and Bone,” “Bottle Rocket” and “Mickey Blue Eyes.” He introduced himself to a new generation playing Walter, the workaholic, stone-faced father of Buddy’s Will Ferrell in “Elf.”

Married and divorced four times, Caan had a daughter, Tara, and sons Scott, Alexander, James and Jacob.

Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the international hit manga series and trading card game "Yu-Gi-Oh!", was found dead on Wednesday. He was 60.

Takahashi's body was recovered off the coast of Okinawa in southern Japan, a coast guard official in the city of Nago told CNN. He was found in snorkeling gear, including a mask and fins, the official said, adding that an investigation into his death is underway.

Created by Takahashi in 1996, "Yu-Gi-Oh!" started as a manga series in the pages of Weekly Shōnen Jump, a Japanese anthology that's also been home to popular series like "Dragon Ball" and "Demon Slayer."

"Yu-Gi-Oh!" tells the story of Yugi Muto, a teenager who, after solving an ancient Egyptian puzzle, unleashes a mysterious alter-ego, who resolves conflicts through different games. The franchise, which went on to include video games and anime series, found worldwide popularity in the 2000s. More recently, there was a resurgence in interest in the accompanying trading cards during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Guinness World Records has recognized "Yu-Gi-Oh!" as the world's best-selling trading card game with over 25 billion cards sold around the world as of 2011.

The 100th Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, held in Long Beach, California in 2013, is also recognized as the largest trading card game tournament ever held. A total of 4,364 players, known as "duelists", battled against one another at the event, breaking the record previously held by a "Magic: The Gathering" tournament, which attracted over 2,227 players in Madrid, Spain, in 2010.

Tributes to Takahashi quickly poured in from anime fans and the entertainment industry.

Japanese entertainment and video game company Konami, which produces and distributes "Yu-Gi-Oh!" trading cards, pledged on its website to carry on the franchise's legacy alongside Takahashi's "countless fans."

"We are shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Mr. Kazuki," Konami posted on Twitter.

"We are deeply grateful for the wonderful 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' universe that he has created, and our thoughts are with his friends and family during this difficult time."

Marvel Entertainment meanwhile wrote that it was saddened to learn about the passing of the "visionary" manga creator, "who graced the Marvel Universe with his imaginative storytelling earlier this year." The company accompanied its post with a photo of Takahashi's "Secret Reverse," a 2022 manga novel that saw Iron Man and Spider-Man team-up in a "technological adventure with a dash of danger."

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s former prime minister, dies after being shot

Longest-serving PM, known for his ‘Abenomics’ policy, shot while making campaign speech in Nara

Sorrow and disbelief descended on Japan after Shinzo Abe – the former prime minister and a towering political figure – was shot dead while giving a campaign speech on Friday morning.

Abe, 67, was pronounced dead early in the evening, prompting a flood of tributes from current and former world leaders, and anger that a politician could be gunned down in broad daylight in one of the world’s safest societies two days before an election.

Abe, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, who resigned in 2020, was flown to hospital by helicopter after the attack outside Yamato Saidaiji railway station in Nara, an ancient capital in the country’s west known for its Buddhist temples and free-roaming deer.

As the light faded on Friday, supporters and local residents visited the scene of the attack – a pedestrian crossing next to a white guardrail – where Abe had been calling on voters to re-elect his Liberal Democratic party (LDP) colleague Kei Sato in this Sunday’s upper house elections when he was shot.

Alone and in pairs, they stepped forward to lay flowers, bottles of sports drink, slices of watermelon wrapped in cellophane, and bags of sweets. They bowed and clasped their hands in prayer; some shed tears and lowered their heads again as they turned towards banks of TV cameras.

“I was having a cigarette break near the station when I heard a huge bang,” a local traffic control employee who declined to give his name told the Guardian. “There was white smoke everywhere. I wouldn’t say people were panicking … like me, they initially had no idea what was going on.”

Abe was only minutes into his speech and had just raised his fist to make a point when he stumbled and fell after two shots were fired from behind him at close range. Seconds later, men thought to be members of Japan’s secret service tackled a suspect to the ground in a dramatic intervention caught on video.

The suspect was named as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old resident of Nara who spent three years in the maritime self-defence forces until 2005. Police believe he had crafted a homemade gun. The weapon appeared from TV footage to comprise two cylindrical metallic parts heavily bound in black tape.

Police said they were investigating whether he had acted alone. He reportedly said he had wanted to kill Abe because he was “dissatisfied” with him over issues unrelated to politics. The suspect said he bore a grudge against a “specific organisation” and believed Abe was part of it, police said, adding that it was not clear if the unnamed organisation actually existed.

Several similar homemade weapons to the one used in the attack were confiscated during a search of the suspect’s house.

Makoto Ichikawa, a local businessman who had been near the train station waiting for his wife, said Yamagami “came out of nowhere on to the middle of the road holding a gun”. He said he was struck by the assailant’s “normal” expression.

Ken Namikawa, the mayor of a nearby town, used a microphone to call for people with medical experience to help Abe. A photograph taken at about the same time showed Abe lying face up, blood on his white shirt and surrounded by several people, at least one of whom was administering heart massage.

Abe was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was pronounced dead after emergency treatment that included massive blood transfusions, hospital officials said.

Hidetada Fukushima, the head of the emergency department at Nara Medical University, said the attack inflicted major damage to Abe’s heart, in addition to two neck wounds that damaged an artery, causing extensive bleeding. Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest when he arrived at the hospital and never regained his vital signs, Fukushima said.

The psychological fallout from an assassination by a gunman in a country where gun crime is almost unheard of is hard to gauge at this early stage. But Abe’s death, coming at the end of an election campaign, will almost certainly prompt a rethink of the tradition of bringing politicians into close contact with voters.

Some parties announced that their senior members would halt campaigning for Sunday’s election, but the ruling LDP and its junior coalition partner Komeito said canvassing would resume on Saturday.

An official of the Nara prefectural police department said the department would look into whether security at the event was sufficient and take appropriate action. Several commentators said security around Abe should have been stronger.

Several Japanese prime ministers were assassinated in the prewar era, but Abe is the first sitting or former premier to have been killed since the days of militarism.

There have been other politically motivated killings in more recent times, however. In 1960 the leader of the Japan Socialist party, Inejiro Asanuma, was assassinated during a speech in by a rightwing youth armed with a samurai short sword. In 2007 the mayor of Nagasaki, Iccho Ito, was shot dead by a member of a yakuza crime syndicate.

Japan’s current prime minister, Fumio Kishida, said Abe had demonstrated “great leadership” during his time in office, adding that he was “lost for words”.

“I have great respect for the legacy Shinzo Abe left behind and I offer my deepest condolences,” a visibly upset Kishida said after abandoning a campaign stop and returning to Tokyo. “This attack is an act of brutality that happened during the elections – the very foundation of our democracy – and is absolutely unforgivable.”

Joe Biden, who is dealing with a summer of mass shootings in the US, said: “Gun violence always leaves a deep scar on the communities that are affected by it.” He added in a Twitter post that he was “stunned, outraged, and deeply saddened by the news that my friend Abe Shinzo, former prime minister of Japan, was shot and killed. He was a champion of the friendship between our people. The United States stands with Japan in this moment of grief”.

Abe was a divisive leader, adored by conservatives who had tired of decades of official soul-searching over Japan’s wartime conduct, but loathed by progressives who watched on with horror as he used his party’s comfortable majority in parliament to loosen some of the legal shackles on the country’s military, known as the self-defence forces.

Among his admirers were Rami Miyamoto, a 23-year-old company employee who had stopped to watch Abe’s speech on the way to a work meeting. “I’m in a state of shock,” she said. “I followed Abe’s career as prime minister and admired what he was trying to do for Japan. I’ll remember him as someone who faced huge challenges but always came back and carried on. I will never forgive the person who did this.”

Yuji Izawa was working from home when he heard helicopters overhead. Moments later he received a news alert saying Abe had been shot. “My home isn’t that far away, so I came to find out what was happening,” said Izawa, who works in telecoms. “I was praying that he was going to be OK, but …” he trailed off. “How could something this terrible have happened in Japan?

Tony Sirico, the actor known for his role as Paulie in 'The Sopranos,' has died at 79

Tony Sirico, who portrayed an aging and wisecracking gangster on the HBO hit show "The Sopranos," has died, his manager said. He was 79.

The actor died Friday morning at an assisted living home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, his longtime manager Bob McGowan said.

Sirico burst on the scene late in his career as "Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri, a character marked by gray-streaked hair, twisted street wisdom, and the inevitable deterioration of physical strength.

In real life, McGowan said, “He was so tough but so gentle.”

Sirico was an Army veteran who would help anyone and always gave to charities, he said.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

"He couldn’t remember things as the years passed, he had been in failing health," McGowan said.

Fellow "Sopranos" actor Michael Imperioli mourned the loss of his former co-star in Instagram post Friday.

"Tony was like no one else: he was as tough, as loyal and as big hearted as anyone i’ve ever known," Imperioli said. "I was at his side through so much: through good times and bad. But mostly good."

Sirico had a long career of character acting and bit parts, roles with names such as Poker Player, Frankie, and Tough Guy, before the Sopranos debuted in 1999.

He had an ongoing presence in Woody Allen films in the 1990s, which feature Sirico in bit parts at least four times. He also had a small role in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film "Goodfellas."

But when he read for the "Sopranos," he said, he knew it would change his world.

"When I first read David Chase's script, I knew this was special," Sirico told the New York Daily News in 1999. "This is what I'd been looking for all my life."

There were no A-listers on the emo-mob show — not even close. But Sirico knew it was a crew of actors dedicated to the art.

"When I heard James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli and Nancy Marchand were in it, I knew it was going to be a total class act," he told the Daily News. "I knew right away this was a role to kill for."

He recalled that he was denied the role he read for, Uncle Junior, which was landed by Dominic Chianese. But Chase offered him Paulie Walnuts, an enforcer who could be icy when a job was at hand.

Imperioli recalled Sirico as a high-level collaborator on-set.

"We found a groove as Christopher and Paulie and I am proud to say I did a lot of my best and most fun work with my dear pal Tony," he said on Instagram. "I will miss him forever. He is truly irreplaceable."

On "The Sopranos," Paulie Walnuts was a source of street wisdom and keen observation. Speaking about the explosion in coffee roasters, he lamented that Italian Americans weren't generally the ones getting rich or getting credit when lattes and espressos were sold.

"How did we miss out on this?" the character said on the six-season franchise. " ... It's not just the money. It's the pride thing."

Paulie Walnuts resonated in pop culture, and Sirico reprised the role by making fun of it on the animated comedy "Family Guy."

The Brooklyn native was never a gangster, but he was no stranger to crime. He did time in New York's notorious Sing Sing Correctional Facility, where he said he saw a traveling troupe of ex-cons called the Theater of the Forgotten and decided that was his calling.

He said he earned his Screen Actors Guild card in 1974 shortly after his release from prison.

His acting career included portraying 40 gangsters and five crooked police officers, Sirico has said.

Sirico’s brother, Father Robert Sirico, echoed on his Facebook page that Gennaro Anthony “Tony” Sirico passed Friday.

“The family is deeply grateful for the many expressions of love, prayer and condolences and requests that the public respect its privacy in this time of bereavement,” his brother said on Facebook.

He said Sirico's passing brought him great sadness, but reflecting on his life brings "pride, love and a whole lot of fond memories."

Tony Sirico is survived by two children, Joanne Sirico Bello and Richard Sirico, as well as by grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and other relatives, his brother said.

His brother said arrangements have been made for a Wednesday morning service in Brooklyn, New York.

I have to remember how I was making them and come up with a catchy title. Been awhile, but good idea.

Paul Sorvino, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Law & Order’ actor, dead at 83
By Erin Keller and Samantha Ibrahim
July 25, 2022 2:30pm Updated

Warner Bros

Actor Paul Sorvino, best known for his starring role as Paul Cicero in “Goodfellas” and the father of Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, has died. He was 83.

His wife, Dee Dee, was by his side in Indiana Monday morning when he passed away from natural causes.

“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life, and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage,” she said in a statement received by The Post.

“My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed,” 54-year-old Mira tweeted Monday. “My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend.”

With more than 100 acting credits to his name, Sorvino had a knack for playing gangsters and cops, notably in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 hit “Goodfellas” and NYPD Sgt. Phil Cerreta on Seasons 2 and 3 of “Law & Order.”

He played an Italian American Communist in Warren Beatty’s “Reds,” mob boss Eddie Valentine in Joe Johnston’s “The Rocketeer,” Henry Kissinger in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” and Fulgencio Capulet in Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Sorvino attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, where he fell in love with theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1964 in “Bajour” and booked his first movie, “Where’s Poppa?,” in 1970.

He told The Post in 2002 that Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu and Muhammad Ali were his heroes.

“Self-sacrifice, risking their lives for what they believed in — they are true citizens of Planet Earth,” he said.

For the movie’s 30th anniversary in 2020, Christopher Serrone, who played young Henry Hill at the beginning of “Goodfellas,” told The Post that Sorvino would sing opera between takes.

Of his career-making role in “Goodfellas,” Sorvino once recalled how he felt typecast.

“There are many people who think I’m actually a gangster or a mafioso, largely because of ‘Goodfellas,’” he once said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I suppose that’s the price you pay for being effective in a role.”

He had three children from his first marriage to Lorraine Davis, including Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino. He also directed and starred in a film written by his daughter Amanda and featuring his son, Michael.

Sorvino was also a staunch opponent of disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, who was accused of blacklisting Mira after she refused his alleged sexual advances.

“If I meet him on the street, he oughta hope that he goes to jail,” Sorvino told TMZ in 2018. “Because if we come across [one another], I think he’ll be lying on the floor somehow, magically. He’s gonna go to jail. That son of a bitch, good for him if he goes, because if not, then he has to meet me, and I’ll kill that motherf–ker.”

He claimed at the time he only learned about the sexual harassment and assault and blacklisting allegations against the “Shakespeare in Love” filmmaker when the public did, stating, “If I had known it, he would not be walking. He’d be in a wheelchair.

“My daughter is a wonderful person,” he said at the time. “A courageous and wonderful human being and doesn’t deserve to have been treated that way by this pig. This pig will get his comeuppance. The law will get him. He’s going to go to jail and die in jail. But if he doesn’t … I’ll just slap him around. I won’t do anything terrible.”

The “Mighty Aphrodite” star famously thanked her dad in her 1996 Oscar speech, when she won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Woody Allen film.

“When you give me this award, you honor my father, Paul Sorvino, who has taught me everything he knows about acting,” she said during her speech, which brought him to happy tears.

A 2015 New York Times article on the 25th anniversary of “Goodfellas” noted how Sorvino revealed he was so happy to get the part.

“I’d done a lot of comedies as well as dramas, but I’d never done a really tough guy. I never had it in me,” he said. “And this [part] called for a lethality, which I felt was way beyond me. I called my manager three days before we started shooting and said, ‘Get me out. I’m going to ruin this great man’s picture, and I’m going to ruin myself.’ He, being wise, said, ‘Call me tomorrow, and if necessary I will get you out.’

“Then I was going by the hall mirror to adjust my tie,” he added. “I was just inconsolable. And I looked in the mirror and literally jumped back a foot. I saw a look I’d never seen, something in my eyes that alarmed me. A deadly soulless look in my eyes that scared me and was overwhelmingly threatening. And I looked to the heavens and said, ‘You’ve found it.'”

Sorvino is survived by his Wife Dee Dee So, and his three adult children Mira, Amanda, Michael, and 5 grandchildren.

‘Leave It to Beaver’ star Tony Dow dead at 77
By Samantha Ibrahim

Tony Dow, best known for his role as big brother Wally in the classic TV sitcom “Leave It to Beaver,” has died. He was 77.

His management team announced the news of his passing on his official Facebook page Tuesday morning.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share with you the passing of our beloved Tony this morning,” the post read.

“Tony was a beautiful soul — kind, compassionate, funny and humble. It was truly a joy to just be around him. His gentle voice and unpretentious manner was immediately comforting and you could not help but love him. The world has lost an amazing human being, but we are all richer for the memories that he has left us.”

The post — written by Frank Bilotta and Renee James, who managed the star and called themselves “dear friends” — also thanked fans for their support.

“From the warm reminiscences of Wally Cleaver to those of us fortunate enough to know him personally — thank you Tony. And thank you for the reflections of a simpler time, the laughter, the friendship and for the feeling that you were a big brother to us all. We will miss you.”

He is survived by his wife, Lauren, and two children.

A cause of death was not immediately given.

The actor, who played Wally Cleaver on the iconic ’50s sitcom, announced he was diagnosed with cancer on May 5.

His wife shared the news and thanked fans for their prayers, but didn’t disclose the type of cancer Dow was battling, according to TMZ.

The Hollywood native’s health issues first surfaced in August 2021 when he was briefly hospitalized with pneumonia.

“Tony’s spirit is positive,” Lauren wrote on Facebook last year. “He gets his daily exercise by walking the corridors with his nurse. If he could only get rid of that darn cough. It’s going to take some time.”

She noted at the time that he had a “violent cough” that was “causing pains on the top of his head” at the time.

Dow starred as Wally, the older brother of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver (Jerry Mathers), during the show’s original run from 1957 to 1963 for six seasons.

He later reprised his role in the sitcom sequel, “The New Leave It to Beaver,” in 1983. The show aired for four seasons until 1989. The new series followed the Cleaver kids as adults dealing with their family issues.

Aside from “Leave It to Beaver,” Dow found success guest-starring on shows like “My Three Sons,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Lassie” and “The Greatest Show on Earth,” before taking on a recurring role on “Mr. Novak.” He also got behind the camera, having directed episodes of TV shows like “Coach,” “Babylon 5” and “Harry and the Hendersons.”

In 1965, he took a break from acting to serve in the National Guard for three years. He even tried his hand at writing and entered journalism school in the 1970s.

Dow also spent the decade with guest spots on “Adam-12,” “The Mod Squad” and “Love American Style.”
